Taken from a bridge in my hometown last January. I am glad I got the opportunity to share this photo-story through DPC.

India still has 60% of its population living in conditions dire than this. They barely earn $2 for a whole days work, and the days are not merely 8 hour, it starts at the crack of dawn and continues late in the evening.

This laundry place is set up on the banks of a dried up river, it floods every good rainy season, when these people move to a different location. It was middle of the afternoon on a hot day (>100 degrees F), when they stopped for lunch, they all covered their heads from the scorching sun. Only shade they could get was from the little black clothes hanging in the front! A 15minute break and they will continue working again.

@mpeters : Men do most of the washing here, while women help out by hanging the clothes. Cooking is very much a womans domain in India!

I find great beauty in this... I've studied it for a long while... Beautiful and such a story told in the viewing.

It's interesting to see washing around th world. I guess that it wouldn't take long to dry, where you were, though.

I'm glad this scored so well. I see you are from Ithaca. I grew up in tiny Groton, NY about 16 miles from Ithaca. Graduated from Cornell University in 1994. Are you attending school there by chance? If so, TRY to stay warm!!! : )

I love the unusual composition here...not something I see everyday! Back to give you a bump up to 9 for doing something different.

Totally cool, no pun intended. They separate all their different garments during wash day. As a side note...do the women do the washing while the men cook/eat/play? 8

I absolutely love this, one of my few 10's in this challenge. The lines, interaction and scene are wonderful. You should enter this in a travel photo contest.
