Thank you very much for everyone who commented during and after the challenge -- your comments are very much appreciated.

In case anyone is interested, I used curves to increase the contrast. Then I used the hue and saturation dialogue to increase the saturation by about 15. Then I black and whited using the Channel mixer, based mainly upon the blue Channel. Then I sharpened the picture to my usual Web spec for which the settings are go along -- 300, 0.3, 0.

Thank you again for the comments, and the voting to get me a ribbon.

Great picture, really conveys expectation very well. It might have been just as effective in color.

Shame about the players' overlapping positions but it's a good capture and better than most in the challenge. Image looks strangely textured in grass areas though?

Great fit to the challenge. May be too much lost spaces and would be better if the left hand of the receiver was not just in front of his face. Otherwise very good picture. -8

Darn, if this guy's hand wasn't in front of his face, and the other player wasn't right behind him, I'd say this was perfect! As it is, it's right on for meeting the topic. Almost makes you physically look up! :)

the expectation is on screen here - he is expecting to catch a ball. Does not fit the challenge well.

Nice action capture; I like that you can see the catcher's eyes between his fingers. It's a little dark, but one of the best shots in the challenge.

great action shot, pity your POV kind of merges the two players together.

Good, sharp, clean image which suits the B/W format.
A little cropped off the right of the picture would make it perfect for me....9

Beautiful. Although I think my love of football (aka soccer) might make me slightly biased. A 10 ;)

Bound to be a winner, at least it is in my book anyways. :) I love it! Just wish I could see more of the expression on his face but what are ya gonna do? It's still wonderful, nice compostion and a great capture.

Nice capture. Pity about the guy in the background. Tricky shot at the best of times but no doubt you'd agree it would be better with only the one guy with his hands out.

This is a nice conversion to B/W. Also, fits the challenge very well. I would have cropped it in a little closer, but that's just me. 10.
