Location: Lizard Head Rock, Rye Backbeach, Australia

Shutter: 1/8th second
Galleries: Panoramic, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Jan 15, 2008

THE IMAGE: I might kick myself for entering this as I had an image I had saved from April that I really liked. But on looking at it, I just didn't think it would do as well as this. This is an outtake from my Lizard Head Rock image that won me a BLUE ribbon. I love the rays and the dramatic sky. It was dark and light at the same time.

Took this on a tripod and used a slow shutter speed to get the movement in the water.

EDIT: Converted to Grayscale, Duotone, RGB, Levels Adjustment layer, some dodging and burning, some USM. Some Noise Ninja masked to smoothe the sky out.

PREDICTION: Hoping for high 6's...6.9??? It could totally bomb out of course because people might have already seen a similar edit in my portfolio.

Is it the best image I shot in 2007? Probably not...but I do like the image and hope it will do OK in the challenge. I won't ribbon, but if I can do better than 32 out of 705 from last year, I will be very pleased.

POST: Wow! 8th overall...really happy!

Add me as a fan of this shot! The juxtaposition of the different geometric shapes is perfect. The lines of the rays against the shape of the rock, surrounded by the circles of the waves. Absolutely perfect!

My prediction was just a little bit off. :)
I still like this more than the other Lizard Head.

Marvelous in B&W - wouldn't have it any other way. Which duotone did you use for this? 'Grats on doing so well with it both for your blue earlier and placement in the Best of!

Great shot. I should have recognized the subject from your earlier blue ribbon photo. What really grabs me on seeing this again is how the wave makes a circle around the rock. Terrific light rays, too. Congrats!

Figured you'd top last years! The blurred water going in two different directions really makes it for me.

The black and white is very dramatic in this photo. I like the jagged details of the rock too. -BB

P.S. Is this hotpasta?

Very nice in an abstract kind of way. The b&w treatment is perfect for it, and I do love all the lines and angles.

Nice image Enzo. I like the B&W conversion and how you used right shutter speed on the incoming wave to give it a sense of movement without being to blurry.

Compelling composition and toning, but the horizon tilt sorta knocks down your score a little from me.

What can I say? The rays from the left to right. Leading to the matching lines of clouds which carry you into the swirls of water below. All surrounding the unusual, wicked looking rock, present a frame that leaves no way out. It carries the eye around the frame and satisfies the mind. Maybe just a touch dark but I think this will ribbon. Maybe tie for blue. Congrats.

Hotpasta?? I really dig your surf shots, but this is up there. Lots of mystery and history it seems in this rock, I really like the water pattern and the composition you chose. Nice work.
