 open (this was jpeg from scratch)- Ctrl-J (Layer/New/Layer Via Copy) - Ctrl-Shift-U (Image/Adjustments/Desaturate) - Ctrl-J (Layer/New/Layer Via Copy) - Ctrl-I (Image/Adjustments/Invert) and set both the duplicate layers to overlay in the menu at the top of the layers palette.

It's just another way to skin a cat, really, but there's some opportunity to go in and fiddle with the layers etc . . .
