Oh dear, I think this is gonna go badly once again!

~

2003 - Detained refugees in an Australian desert detention facility sew their mouths closed in a hunger strike to protest against apalling treatment and living conditions.

~

I know this is a challenge to the literal nature of the topic, once again thankyou for the freedom to express.

~

My sister posed with sewing thread adhered with glue, garnished with cover-up, vegemite, honey and tomato sauce.

I know this has been here a while, but it really grabbed my attention. I thought it was real at first, and then thought it had to be makeup. So well done! It is disturbing and yet powerful. So glad you had the description under it.
04/17/2006 01:56:32 PM
This is so realistic. Nicely done.
03/26/2006 05:46:26 AM
I absolutly love this. The realism in the stitches and the apathetic gaze are wonderful.
03/23/2006 04:09:56 PM
grotesque! too realistic looking! great capture of emotion. being in black and white helps add impact on the effect of the photo.
03/23/2006 10:06:04 AM
Wow... (ahem)... Wow...
03/21/2004 11:48:53 PM
Are you going to put this print up for sale? I have a friend who would like this.
03/21/2004 08:21:56 PM
Amazing photo. VERY emotional. Wonderful !
03/19/2004 09:08:25 PM
Framing is great and those hollow eyes really do it for me. Well conceived and executed. Should have ribboned for its striking concept alone.
03/12/2004 07:02:29 PM
fantastic.
03/12/2004 08:57:00 AM
wow thats an amazing photo. you've really expressed the emotion of it well. well done
03/10/2004 12:24:26 PM
an emotive shot, and well suited to the challenge topic. Congratulations on an excellent shot!
03/10/2004 09:06:32 AM
this is the best one in the challenge, I´ll put that in my favorites:D
03/10/2004 01:12:43 AM
thankyou for all the comments :)

the blown out highlights on the face were very deliberate, just my taste. (do notice that i didn't leave them at full white, but brought them down a few figures to a lighter white grey.)
03/10/2004 12:19:26 AM
Very striking and interesting work!

great, love this a lot. One of my faves in this challenge
03/08/2004 10:34:44 AM
A bit literal for me...
03/08/2004 01:35:57 AM
Scarily silent... Impresive!
03/07/2004 07:52:55 PM
WOW
03/07/2004 07:08:01 PM
Brave. Very strong with convincing stiches and a broad range of political overtones. I don't want to look at it, though.
03/07/2004 01:49:41 PM
My favourite!
I woner how you did the stiches??
I hope you get a ribbon... it's much better than all the "shhhh" photos! ;)
I give you 9
03/07/2004 11:08:53 AM
Very nice shot, different perspective, nicely done... 9
03/07/2004 10:49:18 AM
Amazing photo, I sure hope this is the winner and that people don't vote it down for "gross" factor. 10
03/07/2004 10:09:30 AM
MANY PEOPLE TRIED THIS SHOT. YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT TRUELY CAPTURED IT.

Somewhat disturbing but also rather mesmeric. The angle and close up creates a strong composition. Harsh lighting and high contrast suit the subject. 8
03/06/2004 03:25:44 PM
Be sure to give your makeup dept. my compliments. ;) Certainly a different slant than using duct tape. Funky eye-socket shadows look strangely amped up.
03/06/2004 10:37:00 AM
poor taste
03/06/2004 07:38:25 AM
excellent. Need I say more?
03/05/2004 10:57:45 PM
Like the idea. and this works as a b&w.
03/05/2004 06:18:08 PM
A real work of art! NICE JOB!
03/05/2004 06:16:51 PM
Wow... very powerful. The only negative I have is that its a little bright in areas... but still. 10.
03/05/2004 02:34:30 PM
Intense artistic statement. My highest rated picture. Brave, bold crop and composition. I like the dark eyes as well. WoW!
03/05/2004 01:21:42 PM
This photo scares me; it's very disturbing. It's also very eloquent art.
03/05/2004 12:17:34 PM
Cutting and brilliant, (i'm add this to my favourites) 10 +
03/05/2004 11:22:46 AM
That's rather profound, but it gives me the creeps.
03/05/2004 07:17:48 AM
eeeyukkkk!
03/04/2004 10:18:06 PM
not into mutilation
03/04/2004 06:13:07 PM
Nice photo. A little gruesome... I think the darkness of the eyes adds to the feel of the photo. Good job.
03/04/2004 03:02:40 PM
This is a great shot, wish there was a touch more detail in the eyes, never the less I think this should be a winner. Interested to know how you created the stiched effect. Is the model into piercing?
03/04/2004 02:00:50 PM
Love the crop and color and idea as a whole, but the blown-out areas on the face really take away from the detail which would've be awesome to see. 5.
03/04/2004 01:25:56 PM
Hebby Jeebes - yuk... cringe factor -1 ... silence to an extreme +1
03/04/2004 12:28:07 PM
i enjoy looking at this, the saturation is nice, but blurry in the wrong places
03/04/2004 10:14:29 AM
7 for being daring and disturbing taking it to the edge
03/04/2004 05:48:26 AM
cool concept.. great contrast.. I love this in black and white - The eyes are beautiful - excellent - 10. This is my favorite of the challenge - and I will add this to my favorites after the challenge is through.
03/04/2004 05:38:35 AM
disturbing
03/03/2004 10:17:27 PM
Strangely, I like this photo. Curious what's used to give the sewn shut look, good color, nice crop!
03/03/2004 10:12:38 PM
I like this photo and I think it's a good idea. The picture isn't gruesome, sort of shocking. But it's nicely shot. The only thing I would point out is the blowout around the nose and cheek.
03/03/2004 06:27:29 PM
I love the black in the eyes. Very disturbing picture
03/03/2004 06:17:06 PM
this is neat
03/03/2004 03:48:46 PM
Very upsetting - lots of people seem to be doing this to themselves around the world these days. I understand the impetus but its sad to me that it's turned inward instead of outward. I'd rather see violence in the streets in protest than violence against ourselves. - 6
03/03/2004 02:36:30 PM
I'm not sure which is more disturbing; the fact that I can't see her eyes appear missing or that someone has sown her lips shut. I shiver. Well done, but egads!
03/03/2004 12:07:28 PM
Yeowch! This totally creeps me out (but doesn't take points off, though). It delivers an impact and fits the theme perfectly. The picture being in black and white helps reinforce the impact further, I think. Would love to know how this was done.
03/03/2004 10:47:17 AM
Ow ow ow ow ow!!
Don't you ever ask me to model for you!!!
Great idea & photo. A few more stitches perhaps.
03/03/2004 07:53:32 AM
I din´t like the idea of taping the mouth like many people did here but this is something else... I like it. Also how you frame it.. 8 points
03/03/2004 06:46:14 AM
Wow - very emotional photo!
03/03/2004 03:44:35 AM
Brrr, scary great contasts, I like it.

ouch... i don't know if it is real.. but it looks real.. and looks painful.. strong image, it is a little blasted out on the cheek, but it DOES look purposful .. same with the darks.. but i will give you the benefit of the doubt.. and support your art (as i have a feeling others will blast you with low scores..)... good input... disturbing.

Inventive, unique work. Like it ...10 from me.
