Fantastic shot! Thanks for posting your how-ya-did-it info. After 30 or so challenges, I think I finally understand the "Be Creative" part of the description...olive oil, three matches...I am so impressed. Great work!

Man! Is it possible that the money they payed to keep you busy (and away!) is already finished?
Come on boys let's collect a new found and this time find an "appropriate" mission for Gary.
I would suggest "Martian Landscapes", what do you think?

Wow a bluey!!! Thanks for all your comments and votes, really appreciated. I am on holiday in Mallorca at the moment but I just had to find an internet cafe to see how I fared :)

I took about 40 shots of this to get it the way I wanted. Basically it is 3 match sticks in a clamp. You can actually see the match stick behind the first one, which unfortunately gives the front one an oversharpened look to it. I dipped the match sticks in olive oil to get a good amount of smoke. I used a lighter in one hand and the shutter cable in the other hand and lit the match sticks behind the first one so that I had enough reaction time to take a photo when the first match stick lit up. I used a black background and two soft boxes from each side.

So, now I am back off into the Mediterranean sun :)

Nice photo very smooth smoke and flame. I really like how the match hasn't finished lighting yet also. I believe this will either take 1st place and if not its definatly in the top 3. Nice Job. 8

Good. Very, very good! OK it $W)(* excellent. The detail on the smoke and the flame and the match stick is exquiste. The smoke detail is a picture in and of itself. WOW and 10 from me.

Nice composition and sharpness and lines. The smoke adds interest to the "usual" match shot.

My personal thought is a ribbon is on its way!
Talk about cliches, but this is probably the best match shot I have seen. Focus is spot on and the straight lines of the smoke turn what might have been a good shot into a winner, the title also leads me to think of the 'other' person (so simple but yet conveys so much)

Trying to find a negative I'd say the match may be a little overexposed

03/05/2004 01:26:53 PM
I'm not sure if I've already left a comment or not, but you just know a winner when you see one and this one is a winner. Fanstastic picture. I'd love to see how you accomplished this.

I like how this is different then most of the flame shots. This one includes the beauty of the smoke. The great shapes and forms that it make while it floats up. "10"

Awesome job of capturing the smoke! Your matchstick seems a little over sharpened or overexposed. Nice shot overall!

good catch, great timing, and a nice combination of flames and smoke. The image looks a bit oversharpened, some highlights appearing around the edges.

great capture of the match igniting. I wonder how may matches it took to catch it?

03/01/2004 08:30:54 PM
Best of the best! Was the smoke added or induced with some material or actually part of the flame up from the sulfur? Crisp and clean. 10 here. When this is over, can we see the intial shot before any work was done on it (if any)?

03/01/2004 07:47:57 PM
My favorite of the "match" shots, the swirling smoke makes this interesting by adding a third ephemeral subject. Something about the match and match head don't seem right. Over all well done.
