Challenge: Beauty In The Everyday (Basic Editing)
Collection: People
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon
Location: Seattle, WA airport
Date: Dec 16, 2007
Aperture: 8.0

This is a wonderful, enormous glass wall at the Seattle, WA airport that nearly cost me my seat on my flight home. Apparently, they close the door 10 minutes before the scheduled time.

The glass bends and curves in interesting ways that end up looking like major distortion in a photo, so I cropped this a lot to try to get straight lines. I was shooting at a bit of an angle, so the reflected lines aren't quite vertical; they're more so in another shot from a few feet further left.

Here's the original shot so you can see the scale of this window.

I recently saw jaysonmc's beautiful silhouette of this subject:

When I encountered the same wall, I just had to shoot my own version. I originally intended to use as much height as possible, but realized the interesting stuff was all at the bottom. Unlike Jayson's shot, there were no good clouds, there was no plane (LOVE that plane!), and the window's curve would've gotten me loads of inaccurate comments about major distortion.

In the RAW converter, I drove up the contrast and darkened the shadows. Then the editing was mostly cropping and converting to B&W using a gradient map.

I thought this was beautiful! I love the silhouettes and with the piano there, it just reminds me of some kind of symphony production.

When I asked if this was the same airport I was thinking of jaysonmc's photo.

I'm quite lost in the perspectives here... :-)

Best so far (after 25 %).

Looks like a scene at an airport perhaps? I like the image, though I don't know if a piano at an airport is an everday scene. I don't see any Wabi-Sabi here at all. Maybe it's not an airport, that could be a golf course out there, in which case a piano would be something to be found at a country club.

Jeffrey, i wish i could vote on this one. this is the 55th image I'm voting on, and the best so far. I think you nailed the wabi-sabi the best of the bunch: The piano player with no one paying attention. the lonely travelers waiting alone. desolation, fleeting beauty. excellent. marking as a fave.

I'm really kinda sad I can't vote on this. This captures the intent of the challenge VERY well, and is just a bitchin'waycool picture. Definitely in the "I wish I shot this" category.

I can't stop staring at this photo as my eye wanders around to all the detail. The silhouettes and reflections are just astounding especially the reflection in the piano body. A beautiful work of art.

Edit: I had to come back and mark this a fav...I just love it!

Great high contrast image with lots of interesting details in the surfaces, the lins, the silhouettes and so on. Intriguing.

Ah, is this that airport again? Love the silhouettes here although that sign is a bit distracting. Too bad you couldn't have moved it for the photo (I realize that would have been impossible).

Hmmm. I know this scene, well at least the location (you can just glimpse a tail wing :). Nice shot. I really like how the young lady stands out among the group.
