Challenge: Free Study 2007-12 (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Oceanside, OR
Date: Dec 8, 2007
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 15
Galleries: Landscape, Water
Date Uploaded: Dec 18, 2007

Did the 4:50AM departure to the coast. This time I went down to the beach at Oceanside. These rocks can be seen in my last Free Study entry from afar. I caught the tide low enough that I could scramble out onto a large rock in the water between waves.

I like to mislead people with titles. :) The astute may wonder how the heck one captures stars when shooting into the sunrise. Well, instead of the stars being fake (as one might first suspect), it isn't a real sunrise. The light is being provided by a tanker or other large ship on the horizon. The long exposure was enough to make it bleed out like the sun rising. I didn't do it necessarily on purpose, but once I saw it I figured I'd take it.

The stars are definitely worked on. There is a fair amount of dodging to preserve as many as possible. Lots were quite faint and even more get lost on resizing. Basically I dodged the heck out of anything that looked like a trail in the proper orientation. You can go overboard though because they start to look really fake. I may have pushed it a bit already (but I like to push the envelope).

I don't think I'll catch Larus in the marathon, but I'll be plenty happy to hold onto second.

I like the color on this one Doc. I wondered how the sun could be up with stars still showing. But I figured it was some kind of Washington state magik.
But......

Ahem, I feel the need to buy some Canon stock. What is this? Your third 5D and you're climbing out on rocks surrounded by water? In the gloaming? Perhaps you should check out some waterproof housings! LOL

We're gonna call you the Flim-Flam Man from now on :-) Heckuva serendipitous image. Of course, I knew during voting it couldn't be "dawn" anyway, since I know these rocks and that's looking westerly. It had crossed my mind someone'd actually sent a friend out with a Zodiac and a spotlight :-)

Great image Doc. Definitely "faked me out" on the 'sun'.
Congrats on the high finish, and 2nd in the marathon!

Very nice, "mystical-like" photo. Good composition. I like the stars in the sky. Best of luck in the challenge.

Up early again, eh? I don't care for the inner border, looks a little green to my eye. I do like the chill I get when I pause to look at this picture.

I love the clarity of the stars in this photo. It really adds visual interest to the top half of the photo and makes it stand out as unique.

Is the light a building or ship in the distance? I sure hope you take the time to explain this shot. The deep blues are wonderful with the black silhouettes.
