Went shooting with nshapiro while I was in upstate NY for a family wedding. He took my up to Lake George, a pretty little town with a walk along the lake. We spent an hour and moved only about 100 yards.

This was one of many options from shooting up into a couple of trees. I liked it because of the vivid red veins and the bokeh (out of focus areas and circular highlights in the background). The vivid mode on the D200 really makes the colors stand out; the RAW file shows the veins as essentially yellow.

The wind was very slight, but juuuust enough to move things out of focus and back at random, leading to classic tradeoffs. I was shooting with the 17-50 at basically its minimum focusing distance of about 10 inches, so I stopped down to F/8 to try to get more DOF. Then I had to increase ISO to 400 to get the shutter to 1/200 so I could free the motion. It's certainly not totally sharp, but hey, it's minimal editing, so I did my best.

I'll probably collect a fair number of DNMC complaints for this, but I've seen plenty of foliage shots in newspapers over the years. No, it's not hard news, but it's definitely appropriate for lifestyle articles.

It's a beautiful photo, no doubt Jeffrey. You got a fave, too. You definitely got hurt for what the voters perceived as a shoehorn - I think this would have done very well in the flora contest, for example.

I'm just not buying this as photojournalism. For that title, I'd expect to see more -- more leaves, a field of trees changing colors, a kid holding this leaf. If you're going to do a set-up shot for photojournalism, there definitely needs to be more story.

Very nice composition and colors. I think it has great DOF and fills the frame very well. Nice work.

Very nice shot, sharp and well composed. A complementary colored BG would have helped make your leaf pop imo. Some people might argue that the arrival of fall is no subject for a front page but when you live in a small town (like I do), sometimes that's as exciting as life gets!!

Wow...Very nice colors. I like this photo a great deal. Your photo made me think of all the other fall colors right outside my window.
