This is quite lovely. I can see doing a whole series of these, particularly if the dancer is someone you know. Different colors, different poses. Would make for a fun project!

I love that red background. I'm thinking of one of those things that goes twirling around on top of musical jewelry boxes. Do they even still make them?

Thank you all for such positive comments and suggestions. The "sharpless" side challenge has been a great stimulus for experimenting and learning.

Her arms are present, but more ghostly than legs or head because of being moved more to maintain balance. In spinning, the dancer plants one foot on the ground for part of the turn, then plants the other foot, and repeats. Since the placement is different each time, the result is "multiple legs" from the long exposure - no strobes required - while the skirt's even motion makes a smooth shape. The spin was pretty fast but not pushed to the limit.

I hadn't thought of a B&W version, but L1's suggestion prompted me to try. The thumbnail above is a hyperlink to the portfolio image. Thanks so much for the idea.

The light behind her is sunshine shining into the room through a red bedsheet attached to the curtains. It is supplemented by a 60 w reading lamp on picture right and a little ambient light through curtains behind the camera. I did not try any faster shutter speeds, although that might have been interesting.

Oooh. That's a nice way of showing the energy in a ballet spin. I really like the red color.

love the sense of movement and the beautiful colours ..
i often photographed moving vehicles, and if you catch them without any motion blur they look like they're just stationary, which is boring & not the effect you're after .. thats wots so excellent about this photograph .. she's really spinning ... its obvious in the movement of her dress and the way the moving 'parts' have blurred .. brilliant !! :)..

I always love when motion blur includes legs, because it turns everyone into a multi legged creature. FUN!!!

The light being centered behind the subject really helps this image. I think you achieved capturing the spirit of the dance move.
Did you try some at shorter shutter speeds?

Great colour and movement! I like the spinning dress and how it feels like it's spinning extemely fast.

This is a lovely abstraction...would love to see it in a tinted or b/w high key as well. Great idea! :)

Oh my, quite pleasing and rather ethereal! Love the reds/pinks/browns of the image, love the multiple feet, kinda miss the arms but not enough to detract from finding this very lovely!
