Challenge: Negative Space (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro 90 IS
Location: apartment
Date: Sep 9, 2002
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/80 sec
Date Uploaded: Sep 9, 2002

Didn't have much time for this challenge since I left for vacation on Tues morning. I wish I had time to try out some other ideas. This is a look down a shaft in an apartment building.

Contrast was helped by levels adjustments. It's not perfecly centered, but that's because when I did center it, it looked more uneven. Something to do with differences in the windows, I think. I see it as having 2 negative "spaces," the white outside and the black inside.

No "Shaft" jokes, please. ;)

I really like this. You sort of have the two negative space spaces going here on, joined together by the walls which have great texture. One of my 2 10s for the week. 10 - chrisab.

Excellent way to make the negative space in the middle and use that to strengthen your surrounding images....10..hokie

NIICE -- plenty of artsy fartsy here to go around. Good shot, and good use of negative space as the subject of the shot, rather than the other way around. Is that possible? I dunno, but I like this shot. Well done ... -9

I like the washed out look in this shot. It's wierd that there is a window on the ceiling too. 8

Almost feels like a black hole. I like the bw, and the high contrast of this. karmat

Cool artistic impression. As in many of this weeks photo's the negative space is merely supposed to support the subject, rather than BE the subject. Still, it is probably 8-worthy.

Very effective. I'm curious how you managed this shot, but it's very good. 8, just-married

There is so much mystery in this image! What is at the bottom of the shaft? Is this a negative image? How did you do this? Inquiring minds want to know!

This is great--the white around the black shaft--very well designed and the black and white emphasise the space andrewm

There's a "negative space" I don't think I'd want to be in :)
09/17/2002 02:29:00 PM
Very stricking ! The problem I have is determining what the subject is so I can determone what the negative space is. I'm having a hard time with this NS challenge so don't worry take my comment at hart. 6. marcvg

Wow, where did you find this shot? This is something I would have on my wall, fo sho! It seems the "negative space" here IS the focal point. But what do I know? heh - bamaster (8)

This photo does nothing for my vertigo! I can't look at it while I type this or I might pass out so if you see a lot of typing errors it's because I couldn't watch while I typed. SUper!!! 10!

This gives me a weird feel of kind of a neg spc within a neg spc. I find the shot interesting, but it doesn't engage my interest a great deal. lhall-6

Interesting choice of subject and a well composed picture. I like how the negative spaces surround the subject. Good use of contrast to accentuate the mood of the picture. Makes me feel like I'm entering 5 portals. - labrynthe

Now this an excellent photo because it has atmosphere and it evokes curiosity... 'Where is this place? What does the darkness lead to? etc.' I like the contrast between the over exposed whiteness of the walls and the darkness. Also, good use of neg. space. Excellent work!
