Challenge: Painting with Light (Advanced Editing I)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Date: Jan 22, 2004
Aperture: 2.2
ISO: 100
Shutter: 4 seconds
Galleries: Abstract, Studio
Date Uploaded: Jan 19, 2004

I taped a small flashlight inside a funnel and then taped the entire contraption to a paintbrush and sat in the dark and messed about until I got what I wanted by using a video feed into a television to see the image as I was setting it up. I decided on an absolutely literal interpretation of the challenge. (neg#04-4246)

very nice - let me guess you moved the flashlight along the brush and the path which appears to be painted?

Great, nailed the subject, my top pick.

Good idea. Not terribly well executed. The curve is awesome at the bottom. A shot worth reshooting to try to get the brush crystal clear.

Definitely fits the challenge but kind of fuzzy.

Good to see one of the few where it is easy to see if someone has stuck to the "category" requirements.
I like this one - obvious interpretation of the category. Unusual but very effective composition. I think one thing would have pulled this right out of the page though. If the brush and bristle holder "called something like the ferrule" had been uniformly lit to make it appear that only the "light had been painted".

Simple. Very elegant. The sweep of the light, the red of the brush all well done. 9

very neat concept - most people are flogged for their literal interpretations. I like it.

terrific! the light on the brush is a little hot, but I love the curve of the light, and the feeling of motion.

very clever and well executed. the brush handle is soft, but I still like the colors and overall effect. 9

oh man, if only the brush was a little sharper this would get a 10!

This is a nice idea.. your spot editing around the edges of the brush are showing. One thing you can do to help preven this is to push your highlight levels after you edit. Subtle mistakes like this one will pop out at you and you can cancel the highlight change and go back and clean up....

Nice pic! But the focus could use some work and the colors are a bit bland.

I like the colors here - had potential to be really good, but if that's a paintbrush, it really needed to be sharper focus.

Excellent interpretation of the challenge! Personally, with such a stark contrast between the black background and the border, I would have used a thinner frame instead to keep focus on the subject vs the frame. That is a minor fault but I still find this an excellent entry. I'm even willing to ignore the minor compression problem in the middle of the "paint stroke" 10!

Nice pun, effectively executed. Maybe a bit more sharpness is needed, though. 6

This is a phenomenal idea. I wish the brush itself wasn't so blown out, though.
