i met a mad squrrel a year ago.
in my norwegian woods, right near the house.
i had never seen such an angry squirrel before!
it was screaming at me, hopping on a tree in front of my nose, hitting that tree, running up and down...
i really thought it would hit me as well.
i was standing there for a long time, i didn't move, i was afraid to scare the squirrel, though was quite scared by it myself.
i was just watching the squirrel hitting the tree and wondering if it really would hit me.
my kitty died that night.
i knew she was very ill, she had been suffering from cancer for a long time.
i hadn't seen her for a year, but didn't really have time to travel back to russia. not that year, i was so busy with my uni.

now i know what the squirrel was trying to tell me.
i didn't understand it that time.
we can't communicate with squirrels.
we don't exist on the same waves.

squirrels, sunflowers, whatever.
i don't know, if i say now we don't understand the nature, animals - i will make my message more simple than it is.
on the other hand, it can't be more simple:)
things and living creatures miss something between each other.

is "missing link" really used only for chains and apes?
well then, just call it my poor knowledge of the english language.

Magnificent work. Your image and story have touched my heart. Almost 1 year ago I lost a kitty, his name was Blue. He was an indoor kitty, but while he was sick I began to let him out in our backyard (supervised), he loved sitting by our pond, so the months leading to that sad day, this is what we enjoyed. On the day that he died, I new he wasn't doing well and that I would lose him that day. So I brought him, in his little bed, out by our pond, I talked to him to reassure him I was there and that I loved him. Although I'm sure he knew I loved him, once he passed away that day, I kept wondering and hoping that he knew i was there with him. The next day I recalled a bird, that had landed within arms reach of Blue and I. This bird was screaming and chirping up a storm, at Blue and I, my husband asked if I wanted him to chase the bird away, but I looked and Blue and his ears were moving to the sounds of that Blue bird and I told my husband no Blue's listening to him. So remembering this, is when it hit me, if he could hear that bird then I know he heard me and it's a moment I will never forget. I'm greatful for that little Blue bird, for helping connect that missing link.
Sorry for the loss of your kitty.
Hugs

Awww, Svetlana...what a compelling image and what an amazing story. I know a little animal communication and the squirrel was doing his best to tell you something was wrong, but didn't know how to convey it...it was trying its best.

I know this because a red squirrel lives in a barn where I work and often scampers back and forth in full view.

A little over a month ago now I found a red squirrel, drowned in a water trough outside. I emptied out the trough, carefully took the body and put it where it wanted to be.

I believe that was this particular squirrel's mate.

And not long ago I took a photo of a red squirrel.

Probably by the time you read this it will be my new PB and have finished in I hope the top 30% of Wildlife IV.

Listen to the animals; what they are trying to tell you with odd behaviour may not be apparent at the time, but will be soon.

(HUGS)

touching story. Too weird that a squirrel could "feel" something like that strong enough to "tell" you. Very interesting and intriguing. Gives me goosebumps. ps. sorry about your kitty. :(

I'm sure they do communicate - sunflowers and squirrels alike. And if we're patient and listen, sometimes we can hear them. Lovely work as always, my dear.

it's a beautiful photo, a great interpretation of the challenge, and your English is just fine. I think the voters were the missing link on this one.

Your english is flawless. And I think 'communication' is a perfect example of a missing link. The photo is also flawless -- beautiful -- and outside of this challenge it is a fine work of art. From the scoring perspective, I think it was too subtle for many of the voters to understand. But that hardly matters, it is the picture and the art that matters.

Would the missing link be the connection between the girl and the flowers? If so, great portrait with a subtle, but very clear message! Good Job! :) Or another possibility, Did she have some apocryphal relationship with Van Gogh who painted the Sunflowers? (Sorry, I know that's a stretch, but it was FUN playing!) :}

Nice shot. Great exposure under difficult conditions. I don't get the connection with the theme but I'm finding that a lot in this challenge. Guess I need more coffee this morning...

I love this photo. I have returned to it several times, trying to figure out what the missing link is here. It is truly a wonderful photograph, but might have worked better in a Free Study challenge.

I really like this photograph, but I can't stretch my imagination enough to see a "missing link" theme. Difficult challenge.

I wonder if this is actually in the right challenge - although given the difficulty of interpretation of this one - how one photographs something that isn't there - I have to presume you mean it. Missing, simply? There's a sense of yearning, certainly. In such a considered image, the vertical distortion - the converging lines, is distracting in tat one expects the flowers to be falling over.
