Challenge: Missing Link (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Date: Jul 11, 2007
Aperture: f9
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/100sec
Galleries: Still Life, Black and White

I had trouble making this shot fit under 150kb and look good resized. So the image quality of this bothers me. It has really great detail when viewed closer up. The idea was to create an indent of a missing link, so the chain there is not the main subject itself.
So sand was the obvious and very numerous material ;).

Not much work had to be done to enchance the sand indentation , some dodge N burn. I mean some , it wasn't to create the effect.
I like the optical illusion here most, so thought that would be the creative point. It can look like an indent or a link made of sand.

f9, 1/100sec, ISO400, Shutter Priority. No Flash. Handheld. July 11th,2007.

Folks, big thanks for your comments and faves. I'm very thrilled and never would've thought this would be received so well but I did hope you'd find it appealing and interesting to look at. This was taken outside on a cloudy day. Quite good though, sunny skies would've given quite the harsh shadows.

I actually did want to initially use the challenge title for my photo title even before thinking of what to shoot, and for it to be simple as that. So the chain which I wanted to use as a prop before (the Chain challenge) came to mind first and I went with it, even though I expected lots of chain pics to be posted. Sometimes you just like an idea so much.

Edited to also add:
Here's a crop, but resize of the original JPG saved from RAW.

GGORGEOUS IMAGE-the colors & textures are so palpable (I love the beach!) this works so well, the smaller size didn't seem to hurt much from my viewing angle. Good for you! CONGRATS On the ribbon!

This would have even more impact if, instead of the scallop shell, there was a human footprint. Nice concept and shot.

Interesting take on the challenge. The grainy look works well. The contrasts are maybe a bit to subtle...

Wonderful still life. This is like Man Ray meets Anne Lindbergh.

hmmm....an actually semi creative take on the most literal interpretation of the challenge possible, i like the texture in the sand alot

A cool representation of a literal interpretation. Yours is the best idea I've seen of an actual split chain, and well-executed to boot. The grain carrying through it all helps, complete with choosing a rusty chain. Nice work!

Well I have seen a lot of chain links in this challenge but I have to say that for me this is the most visually appealing. Great colours and textures. the overall effect is of some weird creature emerging 8
