Actually, not horns at all. Those are antlers, which are re-grown each year and shed each year, in total. You are confused with other species, such as bighorn sheep or mountain goats, which do have horns.... that grow incrementally each year.

Only the male wapiti have antlers. Antler growth is minimal until the animals are a few years of age.

wow.. excellent photo.. one of the best i've seen today for voting under Solo challenge. really love the halo effect around the mountain deer's horns... one more thing i enjoy in this particular photo is that i can associate "my @$$ is burning out here but still i'm looking for a companion" easily with this. LOL. 9 from me.

Wow! This is amazing, a definite 10 from me and straight to my favourites. I am guessing this is hahn23's photo?

Very impressive. A little more space would give it more of a "solo" feel.

This has perfect focus on the subject. I feel as if his surroundings are a touch washed out. Maybe I'm too used to over saturated tones. I wonder what an adjustment of curves or levels would give it a tad more oomph. He is majestic indeed! 7
