Isaac picked this camellia bud and carefully peeled back the embryonic petals to make this little (1/2-inch across) flower. Background is a sheet of plastic diffusion material from a fluorescent light.

Incandescent light plus a tiny penlight to try and get the camera to focus on the bud.

Tone curve for contrast. Heavy color cast from the tungsten lighting led me to try some color curves and I settled on this greenish version.

Uncropped; resized, two passes with USM at 66%, 0.6 dia, 5 levels.

The wilted flower on the vast hostile background with yellow coloration conveys a clear message of betrayal, loneliness and dispair. Not a message I like very well, so the image is disturbing to me. But the fact that it elicits such a strong reaction means that the photo is well done.

Not sure, but the colors on this just seem way too yellow.

very interesting background/surface, it gives depth and texture, I might have liked a tighter crop to get rid of the white speck upper left and emphasize the bud a little more

Great idea and composition, I also like the angle. All I could mention against is that II would have chosen a background with a colour that has more contrast with the bud and there is a white speckle (5 cm from the left, 2 cm from the top) which could be removed easily.

I like this idea, but feel there is room for improvements. The color is too yellow/green and I think the background is overly busy. However, I could live with the background but to color puts me off. Still I do find this interesting to look at. Good luck.
