One of the pieces of art by Dale Chihuly on display at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. I thought that this would be a good idea for the desat challenge but I didn't like this photo for this challenge after processing it. However, after shaman took at shot at processing what I had posted in the team thread, I decided that it had potential afterall. Thanks Steve.
Post processing was levels, desat using the channel mixer process in the tutorial by fotomann_forever, history brush to painstakenly brush the color back into the glass and the reflections, reduce brightness, increase contrast, history brush to undo these changes to the remaining color, increase saturation in the color, unsharp mask, crop, size for web.
....then I went back and dodged the highlights quite a bit to bring out the reflection of the colors some more and four versions later I uploaded this one to replace the earlier entries.
....then decided on adding a border, so this is now version number five. |

It may look a little busy, but I like that.
I like the contrast between the black and white and the color..... |

Greetings from the Critique Club :)
I didn´t vote in this challenge but would probably have given this shot a 6. A 6 for me means a good shot, above average in the challenge but not really making my jaw drop or interesting enough to give a higher score.
Keep in mind that I really detest selective desaturation but I think this shot is using that effect kindof well, it doesn´t scream at the viewer "look at me, I was selectively desaturated" but the effect blends nicely together with the surroundings wich is good for my parts.
The composition is allright, above average but I do find the frame a bit busy, my eye isn´t really drawn to the boat but more to the branches to the right of the boat. I think (without having seen the surroundings though) that had you taken a couple of steps to the left and also framed the boat so it was more in the upper right corner instead of the left it would have appealed more to me. I also think the ripples in the water don´t help, I know you hardly control the weather but perfectly still water and the reflection that would lead to would have helped this shot a whole lot, both made it more still and interesting.
Focus, sharpness and contrast are all good as well as the colors in the color part of the photo.
All in all a pretty good shot, just needs that little extra and I think it was a bit lower placed in the challenge than it should have been, for example I definately think this is better than what I entered, guess having a babe in a bikini can never hurt :)
Kind regards from Iceland, Larus.
