Aussie Billy McConnell racing his Virgin Media Yamaha YZF-R6 in the British Supersport Championship, support race to British Superbikes, at Oulton Park. Having qualified well, held 2nd place in the race and set the fastest lap he unceremoniously crashed out making a passing move on Ian Lowry into Druids.

Same championship and same corner (inside of Lodge) as my Photojournalism entry, only this time there's very little cropping!

Excellent shot! Seems you had a great position on the track. Always to the inside! I have not yet hit any race events. But do I love to pan! I would imagine your IS lens would help out a lot with this.

No website, but here's my 3 step plan ...
1. Your pan should be like a golf swing, smooth and make sure you follow through.
2. Practice.
3. Repeat 2 ad infinitum!

I could have sworn there was a sports tutorial on this site but I can't find it now!

Very nice pic skippy. How do you get such a clear, almost print like picture. Is this a more expensive lens or something in photoshop I don't know about.

Thanks, and nice photo.

w00t! Not a bad week so far ... started a new job on Monday and now this : ) I was lucky that this challenge coincided with the Superbike meeting for sure.
Looked like I was headed for a personal best too until the weekend. Ho hum, will have to be next time ; )

Great shot. I am glad a motorcycle racing shot won the blue ribbon. How unfortunate that the dates did not allow me to enter one of mine. :)

Looks like a good spot at the track. I like the angle at which you can shoot, considering the background. And with 300mm to get this with very little cropping you need to be very close = nice.

I didn't vote, would have left you a comment for sure. Motorcycle racing photography + Yamaha = comment. :)

Great work and congrats on the blue...it's tricky enough to catch a high speed subject like that but the way you've cropped it (did you crop it?) seems to enhance the sense of motion more.

A deserved winner...the close crop and the sheer action and drama sets it apart...well done. You'd want to get something as good as this from such an expensive lens! Great work and congrats on the blue

Stunning shot! One that Billy McConnell would be glad to have for posterity I would have thought. Great panning, shutter speed just right to show some motion in the background and the wheels, but still sharp where it counts.

I'd love to know which cicuit and how you got so close. Long lens with tight crop or did you manage better access (and how)?

1+9+2+1=13 and the score scale doesn't go that high. I guess I'll have to leave the hatch open and give it a 10.

I would say this is perfect as far as aesthetics go. The only critique that I have is that this is a very typical portrayal of a bike racer. Still a 9 however.

Terrific shot in all aspects. This just screems "speed". Remarkable clarity/sharpness combined with wheel/brake blur. I'm sure you could shoot BSB for a living (if you don't already). Worthy of a cover, and my pick for the Blue. Good luck! 9

I like the tight crop on the rider, it echoes how they get down low in the corners. How the red and white carries through the rider and bike to the course markings creates a unified scene. Nice work!

By far one of the best shots of the bunch. I'm sure you've heard that already though. I really like how well you panned this shot to get the movement of the bike. That had to take some serious practice. The cropping is perfect. It really makes you want to keep looking at the limited details in this photo.
