Challenge: Sports III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Nikon D200
Lens: Sigma 100-300mm F/4.0 EX IF HSM for Nikon
Location: The Melbourne Cricket Ground
Date: May 5, 2007
Aperture: F4.0
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/800

On this day, my team Hawthorn won. The guy in the middle is our captain. The guy catching (marking) the ball is from the opposition. My favourite player Buddy Franklin kicked 9 goals, so we had a great day.

The image was taken with my new Sigma 100-300 F4 which is a superb lens for this kind of shot. It was really overcasta nd dark and they didn't put the lights on like they usually do, so putting the teleconverter on was out of the question. It was black as guts as we say around here.

PREDICTION: Don't know. I have many better shots, but this week, I couldn't get one cause of the light. 6.1??? Maybe 6.3max.

POST: Glad this did well in the end. My fourth highest rated image, which is a surprise to me. I have so many better images of this sport, but this is the best one I had in the timeframe. Thanks everyone for the votes and comments.

Please... let me know what sport this is after the voting is over. Looks like soccer...but they are trying to catch it with their HANDSS! I grew up in an era where soccer players were sissies. Oh if I only knew then what I know now.

The picture is a great one... and you are right...some men CAN actually fly! (8)

Seeing as a couple of people took umbrage to my calling soccer in the 50s and 60s a sissy sport... it was only my conception of the sport back then. I have since gained a LOT of respect for the sport and thus, my comment..."Oh if I only knew then what I know now." Sorry to all I upset. Was totally UNintened!

Marvelous capture!! The focus is great. Very impressive action. Good focus. And I would like the composition better with the top tier cropped off, but no matter. 10

Nice stop action photo. That one guy has some pretty serious vertical leap. The photo works great in b&w...very nicely done!

Great catch and focus. I wish I could see the players faces but I'm sure you cant ask them to redo it or pose for this shot.

Lovely capture - Nice and sharp and the black and white conversion has helped take the distracting background colours out - Very nice.

Excellent use of b/w on this shot. It really adds the focus on the players. Good use of limited DOF and great capture of the actions. That is what sports photography is all about!
