I was shooting for the Image Grain challenge back in March and caught this pelican taking off. How I wished it wasn't grainy now. I didn't use it for that challenge because I felt it didn't really meet the challenge.

I gave it the Noise Ninja treatment to remove the bad grain in the sky, but left it on the pier and pelican.

Converted to black and white, sharpened a little and used Melancholytron again to give it a vignette and a sepia tone.

Perfect black and white tones but the best part is the backdrop I think!

Love the detail seen on the flapping wings! This action shot has some very wonderful sharp details in the wing and body of the pelican. The tones and contrasts are great - the pelican really pops off the background of the sky. The only small nit is that the top portion of the downstroked wing in the foreground detail gets lost on the dark backdrop of the ocean - the tones are almost the same. Not sure how to make that stand out a tad more aside from mayhap using dodge very sparingly. Other than that this is a great capture of a pelican in mid-flight.

Robin!!! WOW! The perspective on this just blows me away! That bird seems larger than life. and you have managed to even capture personality in that bird you were so close.

I saw the thumb and almost shouted out - NO WAY!

What a PRIZE capture - WOW!

Not loving the treatment - can't put my finger on exactly why - I think the bird looks a little surreal - maybe that's what you were going for???

The size of the bird in relation to the pier is what makes the photo for me. It almost doesn't even look like he's flying but rather protecting the pier.

I'm always so amazed when people get a bird in mid flight. Terrific stop action. In a perfect scenario, he'd be up higher and not "competing" with the pier, but wow - the focus is spot on.

It is wonderful!!! The crop is perfect, the pier really sets the scene and the pelican is perfectly in focus.

That is such a lovely capture of an outstretched wing - fantastic tonal range, and the tone of the sky contrasts so well with the foreground subject. Wow.
