No ladybugs were hurt in the making of this photo!

This was an easy set up - clear bowl with soap and green food coloring. The ladybug was a little more difficult. I put him on a "raft" of a wood shaving, but he kept moving. He is now happily living in my garden.

I wish I could have cloned the hot spots from blown water, but alas, 'tis basic editing.

Greetings from the Critique Club

What a joy to get this image to critique, although I'm not sure I'll be able to say much of anything helpful, it's such a beautiful image as it is. Here it goes :)

As a concept the image is great. It's a whimsical story, a little ladybug lost at sea, looking at the edge of the raft for a place to land. You could write a children's story-book about that. You pulled off the idea quite well. The title helps. Without the title, the idea would still come through clearly, but the title definitely helps.

As a composition, it's well done. Possibly the large black area in the centre is a bit too large, a bit too much dead space if you wish. It's hard to tell. I wonder if a hint of detail in all that black might work. The colour scheme is beautiful, very soothing (red/orange and green). The inline border is delicate, very appropriate to the image.

Technicals, the limitations of basic worked against you here :) However, it's possible that a bit of adjustment (either curves or S/H or maybe brightness) would do good for the image. The ladybug itself could be a bit brighter. Again, the black area could maybe have a bit of detail in it (watery detail?).

Does it meet the challenge? Yes, it does, there are bubbles in the image. It doesn't "sell" the concept of bubbles though, and that likely worked against you being top 10. It sells the story of a lost ladybug, the bubbles are somewhat incidental to that story, not main part.

I hope this helps. Any questions, complaints, whatever, feel free to contact me.

~Ursula

I see you are over 1000 comments now but I thought I'd continue the trend for you. What an awesome macro. It's kind of like a polar bear trying to decide if he wants to get back in the water or not. The use of green food coloring is an interesting choice. Great capture!

Super shot. The combination of colours and negative space are quite interesting and engaging.

Very cool shot. I like the dark area in the middle and the focus is great.

The dead space in the middle really works here and emphasizes the "adrift" theme - such a good "something out of nothing" picture and the lighting is so very well done.

Holy cow! This is AWESOME!! I didn't get a chance to vote (or even view) this challenge. Really, really good - love the comp, the deep richness of the colors. Great job!

Wonderful picture, the lines really make a strong composition. This is one of the best examples of negative space, because it isn't just the subject and negative space. This is negative space separating the two points of interests. Brilliant. Colors are surperb. This shot give me a lot of ideas for my own shots. I really recommend people study this shot and why it works. Making it a fav.

one of the better shots I have seen so far. lovin the mini bubbles on the left, very creative. only critique would have to be done in advanced editing, and that would be to make the lady bug redder, she looks kinda orangish or too dark, nice complimentary colors too. 9

An interesting combination of subjects and colours. Just a tiny fraction lighter would have helped I think.

Great shot, only improvement I can come up with is a slight (positive) brightness adjustment, but overall very nice! -9-

You captured the bubbles and bug nicely. However, there is so much negative space between the two that the photo seems disjointed. I do like how the markings on the ladybug mimic the bubbles. Good try

nice little allegory. I don't normally give high scores to ladybugs, but I am always willing to make exceptions. 8
