Challenge: Night Shot IV (Basic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G7
Location: Covent Garden, London, UK
Date: Apr 7, 2007
Aperture: 4.5
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/8
Galleries: Abstract, Action
Date Uploaded: Apr 10, 2007

Wandering around London on Saturday night and found this carousel in Covent Garden. Good opportunity to experiment with panning on my new G7 and caught a few good images. This is my favorite.

Minimal post processing: minor curve tweak, minor saturation boost. ISO 100 I believe... Canon doesn't store the ISO in the G7's EXIF data.

---

During the challenge, quite a few comments said the image is blurry, too confusing and out of focus, with low scores. I wonder how many of them ever tried to pan a scene at night?

The image IS in focus. The subject is in motion, right to left AND the horse moves up and down, plus the rider is doing some kind of cowboy move, all at the same time. All of this accounts for the motion blur, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve with this image. But, the subject IS in focus - check the left front leg of the horse.

It's a cool looking use of motion blur. I like it. I can see from the voting breakdown and comments that a lot of people really liked it, but (as is the fate on DPC of blur and abstract shots) a lot of people also disliked it. A successful entry in my book.

left foreleg in perfect focus. This is a masterpiece. Posthumous Blue Ribbon. 10

Would've been nice to see the focus on the horse with the blur background

I like the colors, but the subject is a bit too chaotic.

I like this one but I think i would have liked it more if you panned with the rider of the horse.

I like all the bright color and motion of this photo. There is just enough for the eye to grab hold of otherwise it could be getting close to being too much though. Very nice!

I really need to see something in focus for this challenge. This is a nice idea for an abstract though. Keep it mind.

Hard when there's nothing to focus on. I like the color and movement but wish something was clear...
