Kalk Bay, Cape Town. The Brass Bell Restaurant. High Tide at 9.20 pm. The tidal pool closest is usually half empty... but it was overflowing and the one in front of the windows is almost at a level with the sea. These huge waves kept pounding the sea wall, and I could feel the vibrations on the wall I was standing on. Must admit to being a bit nervous standing where I was, in the night. The diners were oblivious of my presence and if I had been swept into the the sea - no one would have known!!

Such a vibe though: inside there was a band playing, people laughing, talking and outside with the moon rising to my right, the waves were pounding and the rocks behind and beneath me making these sighing animal noises as the water ebbed and flowed around them. For a change the wind wasn't howling :-)

This brought some huge learning curves - how to balance shutter speed so as to get enough light, but not blow out the light from the windows...how also to catch the waves. I desperately wanted to catch a frozen wave in motion, but impossible at night for me.A bit worried that what should look like mighty surf, looks a bit like a fountain...will wait and see.

Well I stood out there for just under 2 hours (imagine the number of out takes I have on file!)- got lost in the hypnotic space of listening and timing the waves...listening to the the crash, the foam, the ebb... One couple on leaving walked past and I overheard the woman say "armer fotograf" ("poor photographer")...must have assumed I was there on business :-). But I felt very rich for the experience.

There is a restaurant like this in my area, called the Marine Room. I love it!

Nice clarity. I really like that mist in the back too. I'm waiting for Jaws to pop out of the water. Hehe. Very nice.
