Dave Fortin goes big at the Grouse Mountain Quicksilver Showdown Over the City [of Vancouver]. I believe this is a switch backflip. He landed on the deck (flat part directly below him) here, got up, and hiked back up the mountain to go again. Now THAT is fitness.

For his efforts, he was rewarded with $1000 as the crowd favorite. He didn't actually win the comp cause he didn't actually land anything he threw, but with air that big, I don't think anyone in the crowd cared at all...

---
!Thanks everyone!

Theres a video of the Showdown on snowboard.com, my photo is right at the 1:46 mark... the last 4 jumps are all the same rider as in my photo.

Here are some other photographers shots from the same event.

I thought about entering this or another from the comp in the free study, but I really did like my entry there as well...(apparently, others didnt...)

Theres some more shots from the contest in my portfolio in my Snowboarding folder.

Again, thank you all!

Really cool - something about the point of view, or the way you cropped it or something, reminds me distinctly of the feeling you get when you jump. There's that split second when you are in mid-air... holding your breath with your heart going into your mouth... :) An awesome job capturing that!

His trick is pretty spectacular, but I'd have to say that your composing of him against that incredible vista is what makes this photo so spectacular. Congratulations on winning the blue ribbon!

You could have shot this as a simple looking-up-at-snowboarder or mid-air-showing-face-of-determination picture, but instead you got creative and included the landscape. That choice made the shot so much more interesting. Great job.

What can you say that isn't amazing about this photo??? Besides the fact that you have a great sharp image of a snowboarding higher than clouds in the sky....teh back ground really adds too it. The background is faded enough that it keeps all focus on the snowboarder. Your subject colors and contrast are just amazing...and I can even see the snow falling from his snowboard. By far the best photo in the group....10

Are you focusing on anything in particular? Both the background, the snowboarder, and the jump are equally distracting, however all three of these are major parts of the image. Hmm. I like this. One of few images of the sort that appear high-up while still including the point of ascention. I like this.

04/05/2007 06:48:13 AM
Wow! This really takes my breath away, but it's more due to the snowboarder that to the picture itself. I'm not sure what could be improved, everything seems ok, but all the same the picture is not much attractive.

sweet sweet shot...It's very different from the normal closeup shot you always see in sports. It's an amazing scene mixed with a great action shot. You picked the perfect moment to capture the boarder. He or she is in the clouds, so the simple background of the sky works better than the city. It's also nice that you included the jump (or whatever the termonology is) in there. It adds a lot compared to cropping that out. The photographers at the bottom also add a nice touch. This seems kind of photojournalistic.
