Challenge: Soft Focus (Classic Editing)
Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Siphon's Draw, Arizona USA
Date: Nov 29, 2003
Aperture: f/8.0
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/160th
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Nov 30, 2003

This image was taken along the Siphon's Draw Trail in the Superstition Mountains Wilderness area east of Phoenix, Arizona USA.

The Superstitions are famous in the US as the hiding place for the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine. It remains the only gold mine from the Old West that has never been relocated, but people still keep looking. :)

I had a great time taking about 150 sunset shots over two evenings.

My intention was to create a dramatic sky effect. I did do some color enhancement, but only to brighten the real color that was already there. I only overdid the blue a little to add interest to the shot.

Neat Image was used for noise reduction in the final submission to produce a soft, surrealistic effect.

talk about a totally amazing and beautiful image ... that sky is absolutely stunning ... even the slight blur around the silhouetted plants looks good, it sort'v fits in with the softness in the sky .... another lesson for me, coz i would'v probably deleted this pic coz the silhouettes dont look sharp/focused !!....

This is amazing! The colors are PHENOMENAL. The soft focus really adds to the tranquility and peacefulness in this scene. I am a sucker for sunrise and sunset photos. The motivates me to redecorate my living room and incorp a southwest theme so that this photo would work there. Wow. -10-

I think there is a little bit too much saturation here. It doesn't look natural to me...

Kind of harsh for soft focus to me.

There is a bit of what looks like over sharpening (before blurring...), best seen on the cactus to the left (white lines on the outlines). Looks like youi have oversharpened the image and then blurred it. Colors are great and the subjects are great as well. I think you should have skipped the sharpening, everything else is great.

i think you've made it difficult to notice the soft focus with a nighttime shot although the colours are great. I can still see the soft focus in the clouds and the outline of the cactus but it is not immdeiately obvious

Very striking colours with a bizarre vibe to it. You've managed a quite surreal effect (however you did it) and it makes for an impressive scene. Good job.

This is very nice.....from the thumbnail I was almost thinking this photo does not look soft....but, first impressions can be wrong. Upon seeing the full image it is soft and muted....

Holy cow. Possibly THE most beautiful sunset I've ever seen. The detail in the clouds is amazing, and the soft focus adds a fluid feeling that greatly enhances the photo.

Absolutely stunning. Bravo! The colour saturation really makes this shot. The cacti are jut a little too much especially the one in the very near foreground on the right.
I still must vote 10. My pick for shot of the challenge.

You made a nice choice - a beautiful shot with striking color. I love the layers from deep blue to deep orange/red. The cactus sillouhetes add interest. Well done :-)

high impact shot. Whatever you have done here with curves, colours, levels, whatever it is, has really worked well.
