My first concept suffered from an issue that I couldn't fix in Basic Editing, so this was Plan B: a carousel at the local zoo. The unpainted horse in the foreground is part of a display of free-standing carousel horses that runs along the walls of the room. Normally, you can't get behind them for a shot, but the zoo director was kind enough to bring one out into the middle of the room for me. He even held a reflector to help illuminate the horse. Without his help, this photo would have been impossible. Thanks, Gregg!

FWIW, a horse named Whirlaway won the Triple Crown 1941. Unfortunately, the yellowed wood of this one looked like bad white balance, and the background carousel was mostly red and yellow too, so there was really no benefit to leaving it in color... hence the toned B&W approach.

Processing: Convert from RAW, Levels, attempt to get decent color with Photo Filter and HSL, USM, Curves, Channel Mixer conversion to B&W, slight color tint added with HSL, Noise Ninja, add border and USM.

DOH! Just missed a ribbon. Well, at least it wasn't another Yellow. ;-)

Great shot, Shannon. And what in the world do you need another ribbon for anyway? Surely you're not doing the kitchen in them, too?!!

I like this a lot. Seeing the one carousel horse in focus gives it a nice perspective. The tonality is great plus the catchlight in his eye. COOL frame too. 8
