It's badly focussed, badly processed and I can see a couple of things I could do if I did a re-shoot. Those are fundamental flaws that come from my using too little time and energy to make the picture.

I left the diagonal rotation lines in for fun.

The cage is, in fact, open. The duck was originally the back of a hairbrush but decoy ducks are popular ornaments in a lot of places, I think. The cage, the cage being open, the alluded song and the kitschy brass photo-frame are all elements of popular culture, though none of them directly belong to the USA or Western Europe.

Thanks for all the votes and comments.

i like the idea, not a fan of the outcome though, i think better use on the DOF would result in a better image, also the colours seem flat, The background does not help either.

I don't understand anything about this. I read the whole poem, which was very interesting, and still don't see the relevance to pop culture. I don't understand why you rotated without cropping; I don't understand why the bird cage isn't open; and I don't understand the duck. Oh, and what is the relevance of the picture frame. Is this another April Fools joke? You're causing me an identity crisis. I don't usually have this much trouble with something. Well done.

P.S. It seems by the scores that quite a few people did "get it".

I guess you rotated this? I think you should crop it down so it doesn't have the odd slanted border. This looks overly smoothed too

A Google search yields this: //www.frmusique.ru/texts/p/perret_pierre/ouvrezlacageauxoiseaux.htm
I suspect there aren't a lot of DPC users familiar with the tune, nor how it fits pop culture, but I'll take your word for it. Interesting composition and intriguing shot. Not sure about the skew within the frame, though - it kind of looks like you rotated the picture but didn't crop again after you did that.
