I have found an easy way to do candids in public is to pretend like you are not shooting the passerbyers, (this was shot from a tripod and my presence was definitely known) I had spent a few minutes dialing this shot in, including testing the shot with a timer and myself as the subject, most people paid no attention to what I was doing...
First I set a circular polarizer where I wanted it, then put two cokin graduated neutral density filters in front of that, a 2 stop one for the sky and a 1 stop one for the ground, then opened up a little spot for the light in the middle. Shot at 1600 ISO, created a black and white gradient map and a selective color layer. Then faded back the gradient to let some color through. Shadows/highlights and a curve. Ran through NI and faded back, then added film grain and faded. A few more slight curve adjustments, USM resize, save for web.

Thanks for all the compliments :). Its interesting you notice this photo as alone and not lonely too, the man was just out for afternoon walk, a loop around waterfront where I took this and seemed quite content.

Been meaning to get back to this one to comment. What I really admire about your work is your vision/goal and your ability to execute (and execute very well, I might add) that goal. I very much appreciate you taking the time to outline how you did this, too. It was one of my top picks in the challenge. Nice mood of isolation created here, though I don't perceive it as sad - just solitary in a kind of content sort of way.

This is just an incredible piece of work! I am awestruck! It's got it all, and the grain is PERFECT! I have generally been voting this challenge lower because grain is so difficult. You have quite obviously mastered it! 9

awesome composition, the shadow mid bridge leading to the pedestrian is just right. the feel is good and really is enhanced by the grain. a hint of detail in the right side of the bridge would have made this a ten for me. nice work

Strange angle to the symmetry there - I would either centre or go completely to one side. But it still looks interesting, and the grainy cloud works well
