As WPL team Icebreakers I was in desperate need for a photo for theme red. I was planning on a portrait but was running out of time. I drove off to Thingvellir national park (30 min. from Reykjavik). The original plan was to find a red house or house with red roof to fit in to a mountain landscape. While I was driving I remembered seeing a safety ring by the watery canyons at Thingvellir when I was shooting the shot fo the \"Ice\" challenge. Hope I won\'t get sued for tossing the the ring. (I pulled it back in :-) The weather was great, reached +9°C witch is high considering the -10°C last week.

I shot both under and overexposed images and decided to use the underexposed since it did preserve the sky better. I could extract great deal of the shadow detail using shadow/highlight. The rest of the processing was fine tuning the color and USM and curves to enhance contrast/pop.

Hrannar

Woohoo ...another ribbon! :D

I'm was surprised by how well this did in the challenge because I thought it would not be too "DPC friendly". My thought here was to show how commanding red is as a color. I boosted the saturation to increase the effect and like the complimentary tone of the blue reflection of the water. The pinkish part of the sky is from using maybe a little too much shadow/highlight witch I used to get greater detail below the water. I was a bit offended by one comment suggesting HDR witch I hate. I do however agree it looks a bit HDR-ish because of shadow/highlight processing. I would have splitted the image into layers if it was advaced editing and will probably proces the image again for final print. :)

Thanks!

This photo amazes me. The clarity of the water and the way the underwater view of the rocks tapers off is stunning. The red stands out so well and is such a crisp red that it really sets the theme. Overall the lighting is just awesome. Incredible image!

I agree, this photo isn't very "dpchallenge-friendly", but I like it.

It looks more orange to me, but that must be Canon's famous red... ;)
(no flames, please, all in good fun)

This is such a wonderful and creative image - Excellent job. I was overwhelmed by the number of votes (voted on about 40%) and never got around to seeing this one. A 9 or 10 in my book!

i'm not too fond of the crop/compo here, i think this would have looked fantastic had you aimed a little to the left and taken it from a place slighty farther back, that way you would get a lot more sky giving more of a sense of speace and the floatation device would sit on the thirds rather nicely. Great imagery nonetheless :)

the geometry leads the eye to the end of the "river",it would work better if the red object was there

Thingvellir? Great idea, but the bright pink sky in the upper left just plain looks wrong. Also the halos around the water's edge and the cliff on the right are too obvious. HDR gone wrong?

The splash of red is very small, yet it jumps out of the picture. Beatufiul landscape. The clarity of the picture is amazing and the water is 3 dimentional. Perfect composition, everything balanced and they way it supposed to be. Good luck with it. 10.

This is a fantastic shot and IMO is the best. The clarity within the landscape is awesome even down to the rocks below the water it is big WOW factor for me. Yet the life saver floatation ring jumps out and the challenge is met. A small but very poignant object. If I could I would score this shot at 15 So Good luck 10
