Location: Cumming, the city
Date: Feb 26, 2007

I used a red plastic cup to get the ice form, then wrapped a lattice table in a black backdrop. I cut a little hole in the backdrop and sat the ice over that hole. I place one of my strobes under the table and pointing up at the ice. I made sure that the table was wrapped well so that I didn't capture any of the walls in the background. As far as the fire, I had an upside down ramekin behind the ice with a beer bottle cap on top of that. I added some lighter fluid to the cap and set it afire. I made sure that my exposure was set to capture the ice and let the fire take care of itself. I also positioned myself just below the plane of the ice to make sure the flame looked like it was just over the ice. Then there was just minimal post-processing, even less than I normally do for my challenge entries.

Having seen images of this type before, the wow factor seems to have left me but this one is very well done with the cube AND flame being perfectly focused and crisp.

Is it just me or does that flame look female? Either way, I love this image- two opposing elements at work. Might be interesting to gel the light on the ice just a bit into the blue range to enhance the color contrast. Thanks for the writeup, always good to learn about someone's setup.

Good job on the top 10 Eric! Combining fire & ice worked well for you, and you've definitely pulled off a shot that I couldn't begin to accomplish. Keep it up!

Fantastic shot, Eric. The flame is great but the colour of the ice is out of this world. Congrats on top 10.

Cool idea. I'm not usually a big fan of studio setups, but this looks cool, even if a bit cheesy.
