Composition in progress...Calm, steady hand harnessing a racing pencil; putting fleeting musical thoughts to paper. The flute is at hand and ready to test drive the fresh, newly written melodies.

The challenge here was to capture everything as still as possible except for the pencil tip, in order to create a surreal effect. I was trying to illustrate a moment frozen in time, while maintaining a sense of motion and urgency. Shot with the in-camera sepia effect. All that was done in PS7 was a minor crop (shaved off some of left and bottom edges), a minor brighness/contrast adjustment, and then preparing it for the web as seen in the tutorial posted on this site (which includes the Unsharp Mask and resizing).

Hope you enjoy!

Nice finish overall coming in 26th. Top 20 would have been more appropriate IMO. :D

I like how you're a poet also - eh?

From photographer comments: "... Calm, steady hand harnessing a racing pencil; putting fleeting musical thoughts to paper. The flute is at hand and ready to test drive the fresh, newly written melodies. ..."

This is wonderful. I gave this a 7, and really don't know why I did not rate this higher, for that I am mad at myself. This deserves a 10, and placement in the contest higher than it did.. Bravo to a wonderful piece of work. It's just an amazing capture!! You should be proud.. Regards, Sheila

Don't like the motion blur.

I like how you've kept this from being another static image of musical instruments/items by allowing a little motion blur to come into play. School days connection? Could go either way I suppose. This would have been a home run if the pencil holder was a child's hand - as is, it's somewhere between a double and triple. :P Good luck in the challenge.

amazing calligraphy, great composition of frame, lines and guiding eyes to the center. believable, has to do with the subject matter unlike many of these photos...

I like how everything in the picture seems to stand still - even the fingertips - except for the pencil-tip which is in blurred motion writing music. The use of the flute at the top is a nice touch. Great composition (musically and visually).

Nice duotone

nice creative, more dramatic lighting would make this very strong, deeper contrast would help it overall.

I generally don't comment on titles, but this one irks me. Feels like you want to show you know more than me, then explain it for the dumber people in the viewing audience. I don't vote on titles at all - it won't affect your score from me - but there's my initial response for you! :-)

This is nice...I like the lighting, and the Sepia.

I like this approach to the challenge - the blur of the pencil just gives it an extra something.

This image would have worked better in colour, with stronger side-lighting, imho.

Coming back to bump up - despite the colour, i rather like the strong diagonal composition and the slight blur of the pencil.
