I have this book (by Ben Reed and William Lingwood; ISBN 1841720844) and thought it would be fun to take pictures of some drinks.

It quickly turned in to an experiment in layering liquers, something I've never done before.

From left to right:

''Golden Glow''. Layered from top to bottom is Blackberry Brandy, Galliano and then Green Creme de Menthe.

Next is ''Stars and Stripes''. On the top is Goldschläger (whose 24K gold flakes fall through the drink to create little ''stars''), then Blue Curacao, then Grenadine.

In the middle is a vodka martini with a lime twist.

Next is a drink called ''Ask the Barman'', with Blue Curacao on top, then Amaretto, then Midori melon liquor, then Grenadine. There is supposed to be a layer of Bailey's Irish Cream on the very top, but I didn't like the way it looked so I re-made it.

On the right in the cool 3-way shooter glass is also ''Ask the Barman''.

Setup on a glass table in front of my TV, which was showing an image from my laptop.

I also did the shot with ice cubes on the glass table in front of the drinks, but thought it might be a little too distracting. I really wanted some dry ice to create a little ''fog'' just above the table but never got any...

(I should note that none of these drinks -- except for the martini -- are in "Cool Cocktails". I just thought these layered shooters would look cool photographed!)

Thanks to all who took the time to comment!

As for the comments about "brighter colors", it was extremely challenging to get the various liquers as bright as they are! They aren't as opaque as I thought they would be, and using water with food coloring would have been impossible, since it is the varying densities of the alcohols that allow the layering.

If I was reshooting I think I whould replace one or two of the layered shooters with "classic" drinks to provide some balance.

I like the drinks and use of color, but they don't seem "HOT" to me. The coloring makes them feel very cool. Good idea though.

Love the colors. Not sure how you got the multicolored liquid in the glass but the overall effect is great.

Really like this photo. Good sharpness. Lovely colour. Interesting background. Very well lit. You should have left a tiny bit more breathing space on left and right - it's a bit too tight. Also it could have been even more striking if more of the reflections on the bottom were included. This should score in amongh the top photos.

This is great! I love the blue, the different sizes and shapes of the glasses adds to this shot also, and the background is a great choice it adds the touch of texture that accentuates this shot, I like it ( 9 )

This is a really cool photo. Just one quibble - it should be more colour saturated.

My daughter watched me voting and when she so this one she said: "This looks nice! Cool!".So here you have two comments in one. It does look nice. The colours used makes it appealing. The lighting is good and the focus soft and nice. I see what you've tried to create here, that sort of optical illusion which is not stiking but does exist if someone takes the trouble of looking deep enough in order to try and understand the composition and determine which glasses are in foreground and which in background. I hope my english didn't make what I wanted to say too unclear. Gook luck with it and 10 from me. I will see it again somewhere among the first ones.

I dont know why I like this so much, the image is not new and is tawdry at first glance, but it dragged me into it, possibly the background held me there. 9

Fun glasses. All the drinks look about the same, except the center one. I would have liked to have more variety or maybe just 2 or three glasses. Not too fond of the background. These are hard shots to do so I admire your attempt.

Cool - lots of work setting this up! I love the background - interesting but not distracting. Wish there was a bit less glare on the far left glass. A bit wider DOF would make everything tack sharp

It makes me fell ill to drink all those! Some glasses are a bit revelling. Others so smoth like the second from left to right. It apear to be obfuscated by their neighbours. But great choice.
