Challenge: Free Study 2007-01 (Advanced Editing V)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Nesjavellir, Iceland
Date: Jan 9, 2007
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 30 sec
Galleries: Landscape, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jan 30, 2007

Taken around 1 am so technically the 9th of January, tripod and 21mm. I am just getting started with this type of photography and will continue submitting stuff like this as it is my new favorite type of photography, or what I call "nightscape" photos as in Night-Landscape. If you start to get sick of it, just vote it down, won´t make me stop though :)

Taken on the road to Nesjavellir from Þingvellir. Am not 100% sure on what that is on the picture but think it has something to do with horses, didn´t bother to walk over to check it out. Lighting coming over the hill is ambient lighting coming from Reykjavik, this is shot at about 1 am.

Only thing lighting this photo is the moon, this is shot a couple of days into the waning of the moon and it was at a very low angle so that´s why the shadows are so soft.

Post processing was pretty minimal except I made two files out of the raw file and mixed them together for some extra detail in the shadows and not to blow the highlights. Other than that, just wb correction, curves and the standard stuff, a little dodge to remove most of the vignetting.

yeah, since i'm here in iceland, i'm taking 80% of my photos after sunset, too and i love it. yesterday i went on a hill at 5am to try to take a 360 degrees panorama of the landscape lit by the moon, all the people here think i'm crazy...lol

amazing shot, i´d really like to join you on one of your next night excursions...;)

beautiful! stunning! did you know that when you shoot canon raw you can remove the vignetting right in the camera raw window? i just read you mentioned that you dodged it. just in case you didn't know and want to save some time editing...anyways, great shot!!! winner in my view

What an amazing sky! If it weren't for the manmade objects I would almost think this looks like a shot taken from the moon. Beautiful!

Howdy Larus. Another very fine shot that seems to come from another planet. Someday when I come to Iceland, you'll have to show me around these sites!

This one almost seems like it is taken from the moon - great image. The clarity of the stars is fantastic.

Very impressive. It's pretty obvious this is going to score highly.
However there are some things i don't like about this, the main being the flat, level horizon running along the center of the composition. If it was slightly lower, or indeed higher it would not feel awkward.
Great capture though, with perfect exposure for the sun from behind the mountain.

Here is what I like about this one, great exposure, great shadows, nice lines. I love the star field and the slight glowing light (sun/city?) in the distance. I think I have seen your shots before, and what gets me is the sharpness, I just think it is too sharp for this resolution. Either that or you are really hitting the defraction limits. It just makes it seem like a 1 megapixel image to me. But beyond that it is a great photo and enjoyable work!

Fantastic sky. I wonder how you got all those stars without to much noise. Well done. If it had a more interesting forground this would be my top picture so far.
