This is an excellent shot Hokie. It had an added impact for me because this was my first idea for this challenge, but it was eventually tabled for fear that it was just too difficult a shot to pull off... you have shown me just how wrong I was. And btw, I love that ant!
08/26/2002 01:42:00 AM
Thanks to the folks that liked this.

I was taking some nature photos on a walk one day, stuck the pencil in the ground...took about 20 photos at various angles and on the last photo this little ant crawled up the side of the pencil just as I snapped the shutter. He literally ran up the side so fast he was gone before I could get another shot off!!! Woah!

Just lucky this one and only photo was in focus!! Don't you just love photography like that :-)

This week I was very generous with my 10's - I gave five of them, I believe. Your image though was by far my favorite. In fact, it blew me away. Well done, Monet, eh I mean, Hokie.

Hokie, this is a great shot... excellent finish!

there is nothing I would change with this picture. unique perspective.
08/25/2002 07:10:00 PM
Creative idea! Good DOF to focus on the pencil. B&W was a good choice, too. Is that an ant on the pencil? Cute ;-)

Good composition. Did you glue the ant there?
08/25/2002 05:11:00 PM
The idea is nice, but the execution is not very exciting. Lighting is good.
08/25/2002 12:03:00 PM
Excellent composition and lighting. Only suggestion I can think of would be to try compensating for the barrel distortion. Great shot!
08/24/2002 08:44:00 PM
The ant crawling on the pencil makes this pic to me. Great job...I hope that you didn't get too dirty down there!!! :-) 9-KrazyKat

Clever idea, but the picture is a little too "blown out" for my taste, although I like the lighting on the pencil.
08/23/2002 10:19:00 PM
Really cool. (Running out of steam for commenting - so being brief) Angle, exposure, b/w, idea, detail, time and effort - all great! 9

Cool perspective and DOF, though I wish the pencil stuck out more.
08/23/2002 09:19:00 AM
Great idea, nice pattern, tonal range. Surely the winner.

I tried very hard to do a similar shot but couldnt find the right location. VERY well dont here. I cant fault this.
08/22/2002 03:15:00 PM
theres something about this i really like..good DOF and focus on the pencil, i dont think this would have made it if the trees in the background were focused. good shot
08/22/2002 08:42:00 AM
One of my favorites of the week. Marvelous unfocus of the background, cool the detail of the ant. I would like to see the color version (perhaps there were a beautiful color contrast between the obscure green of the trees and the vivid yellow or orange of the pencil (?)), anyway I like it very much (9)

nice idea! well executed too. (7) ~mcmurma

I love this image and have looked at it now a number of times. It's very artistic and has great appeal to me. It reminds me of impressionist paintings. The metaphor here is sublime. Love the fact that it is in B&W. It adds to the mood. This is a tough and ambitious image and you pulled it off. The only drawback as a result is the halo around the pencil. You might consider retouching that out which, of course, you weren't allowed to do for the dpchallenge. Well done. 9 Journey
Update: I'm revising my score to 10. The artisticity of this image far outweighs the flaw of the halo. Great composition too. It's a hell of a job to have taken this shot. I have a bit of a hunch who did this image but have been wrong on my hunches before :) Regards, Journey

I think you did an excellent job in originality and creativity. Way to use the imagination!
08/21/2002 11:00:00 PM
great concept..works well in greyscale
08/21/2002 08:38:00 PM
Very effective and creative. The tie-in works even without a title.
08/21/2002 05:30:00 PM
very good
08/21/2002 04:06:00 PM
Great focus and nice use of black and white.
08/21/2002 04:03:00 PM
Good angle and if I'm not mistaken, good point.
08/21/2002 01:13:00 PM
This is a classic; love it. It grabbed my attention. The clever angle and great use of B & W create a superb sense of scale and make an alien object look like it belongs in the in the overall picture. I think this shot shows a great eye for artistry. (10)
08/21/2002 11:58:00 AM
nice
08/21/2002 11:02:00 AM
This is beautiful! I'm kind of looking at it and wondering what I would think if I didn't know if was for the pencil challenge. Would it make sense? It would be kind of surreal. As part of the challenge though, it's one of my favourites. 10 - lisae

The ant is a nice touch! Very nice shot.
08/20/2002 09:09:00 PM
great idea but needs more detail in the background ,though wish I thought of it
08/20/2002 05:05:00 PM
like the DOF and BW
08/20/2002 02:54:00 PM
I love this picture. What's on the side of the pencil? I find myself spending maybe too much time trying to see if that's an ant, a fleck of dirt, whatever.
08/20/2002 10:11:00 AM
Awesome shot with great detail. I especially like the bottom leaf and the ant.
08/20/2002 08:38:00 AM
Gee this is kind of a neat picture. I like your concept... very imaginative, although I find the picture kind of hard on the eyes. I'm guessing you got just the effect you were looking for.
08/20/2002 06:34:00 AM
beautiful... = 10 - jmsetzler

I just LOVE this, the light is just fantastic. I'm a real city girl nowadays but this makes me think fondly of childhood days in the woods near where I grew up. (Hey, enter it again next week!). I like the angles and is that an ant crawling up the pencil? The only (very minor) thing I don't like is the leaf stalk towards teh bottom left which is rising up at an angle.
This is a beautiful photo.

Interesting idea, nice composition and I love the out-of-focus dappled effect created by the light/shadow of the trees. Good work! lhall
08/20/2002 12:25:00 AM
This was one of my favorites for the week. Good luck. 8.
08/19/2002 07:15:00 PM
A really great idea. I love the creativity, just wish you could have done it on a cloudy day to minimize the highlights.
08/19/2002 06:45:00 PM
I really like this. The soft focus in the background is perfect; with the light poking through... The forced perspective shot is amazing. My highest rating so far. 9 -lennier
08/19/2002 05:42:00 PM
Great view. Love the ant. The photo being BW really did the job. If this had been a color photo, it wouldn't have had the depth it needed.
08/19/2002 05:19:00 PM
nice
08/19/2002 05:05:00 PM
each week i give out 1 score of a 10 and this week u r it! what a cute idea and this is a great photo. the black and white is wonderfull and the pencil actually looks like a tree in the thumbnail picture! nice job
08/19/2002 04:05:00 PM
Great perspective shot!
08/19/2002 01:36:00 PM
Very nice. Focus looks good. The lighting seems a bit dark at the bottom. I like what you did with this picture. I'd really like to see what this looks like in color. 8
08/19/2002 12:16:00 PM
like the idea. like the composition. very nice. now all you need is a better camera ; )
08/19/2002 11:29:00 AM
love the composition on this...ant is a great touch...i only wish the background wasn't quite so bright...maybe lower the aperture??? Lisa
08/19/2002 11:04:00 AM
Very nicely done. Clever idea and great execution.
08/19/2002 10:19:00 AM
this picture made me smile! Very nice idea!
08/19/2002 10:02:00 AM
This is beautiful. One of 6 10's this week. Black and white is awesome. I think that if it had been in color, it would have taken away from the "likeness" of the pencil to the tree. Yes, I like the background being oof. Is that an ant making it's self at home on your pencil? Alternate title could be "like father like son". lol. Great lighting, great angle, focus, appeal. Excelent shot and good luck with the challenge.
08/19/2002 09:26:00 AM
Great idea, very creative.
08/19/2002 07:48:00 AM
Well, I am not finished voting yet but this is the best picture so far. I can't identify what is sticking out above the P on ther pencil, but I can't help wondering if it could be done away with. It is the only distraction I see from an otherwise dare I say 'perfect' shot. This might be one to retake and attempt to publish somewhere.
--10 Agamemnon (I really like this)
08/19/2002 02:49:00 AM
Ha. Nicely executed. The B/W choice was a good one for this photo. Yellow would have detracted from your point, er, should I say, your purpose. 8
