I had seen something similar done with matches, and wanted to recreate it and see if I could improve on it. Broke and glued the matches to a sheet of paper that was around a CD case. Stacked it up on top of some things so it was the right level to be in front of my monitor. Set the color of the monitor to something close to the paper. Lit from the side with a desk lamp.

Post processing: Levels, convert to greyscale/quadtone (adjusted colors and levels there), bumped contrast around +3, resized, converted back to RGB, bumped hue -2, USM, added border, save for web.

Post Challenge:
WOW! I never thought this would end up in 4th place! Thanks to everyone for all the kind comments. I think I broke my update button during the week!

I can see two different subjects with the same subjects. I don't know the word for that. But it is either a match stick bug climbing up or two little match people sitting back to back. That is Cool!

Very cute set up but I think the lighting could use some work, it's sort of dull.

I can see the glue or liquid nails holding the right hand matchstick. Thats what photoshop is for! I like the composition, but I think colour would make this a better shot

... *sniffle* I just had an argument with my boyfriend today. It all got resolved just fine, but it was enough to make looking at this picture even more emotional. Nice setup and colors.. lighting is good... it does seem like the horizontal line is tilted a bit but great shot overall.
