This was my first thought for this challenge but when I went to the beach to take the photo the frame wasn't where I rememered it. I took five shots anyway and then tried some other ideas later in the week. They didn't work out so I went with this.

These frames are put up at several tourist spots around Auckland.

Editing Steps:
Convert from RAW in 5 exposure steps: -2 to 2
HDR
Neat image
Desaturate background
Clone out minor distractions and lettering on frame
Saturation+55 inside frame
Auto levels
Curves
Rotate to level horizon
Crop
Resize

Post Challenge:
Woo Hoo!! I never thought I'd ribbon with this. It just goes to show that sometimes you think you have an "average" photo and it just clicks with voters. Other times you think you have a ribbon winner and it scores in the 5's or lower.

For those interested in "how", the original photo shows all...

PS: Visit New Zealand, it's all this wonderful :)

Wow what a close race for third place! Congrats on your yellow ribbon, you edged me out by two points! A most deserved ribbon, and I like your editing to put the inside of the frame in color.

Interesting use of selective desat. I'm curious to know how it would look in reverse, since nature is in color (even snow and deserts) and often photographs are b&w.

This is a really clever shot, well executed. The only thing that keeps it from getting a perfect score from me is the blending / shadow over to the right hand side of the frame. Just outside the border the landscape is darker in a square block - it could well be a trick of the eye even, but distracts. 8

Now this is an awesome fit for this song title! It was tempting for me to take a pretty picture and make it fit into the "Photograph" title -- but this really does fit! Beautiful scene, and perfect fit for the title!

Nice idea and use of selective colour. But somehow the colours inside the photo seem overprocessed, and not 'natural' at all.

Nice idea, but something doesn't seem right... the image inside the frame seems glued there and the horizon line doesn't align with the outside. Also the frame looks bi-dimensional without depth.

I can easily see how this could be done in photoshop - but that makes this image no less visually stunning. Great concept (and wonderful idea to include a bit of yellow beach at the bottom).
