Just an ordinary carpenter's pencil - but with a history. My father gave me this pencil 34 years ago and I have used it in countless projects ever since.

I have to smile at this. I used to work in a lumber yard and had to carry one of these around all day to mark lumber, trim and pipe for cutting. I was the only girl that worked there and I was the only one that ever remembered to take my pencil with me to the yard, so it seemed like I did all the marking. Anyway, great photo. The focus is great and so is the lighting. The bottom right corner gets a bit dark, but it doesn't take anything away from the photo. Kind of adds even more mystery. Great idea and good luck with the challenge.

Good 'ol blue collar pencil has lived a hard life. Refreshing after looking at all the new shiny pencils this week. Your photo really tells a story. The background not being stark black adds to the feeling rather than distracting. The brightness of the flash on the green is a little distracting and I see a few errant white pixels in the dark background but, overall I like this very much. =8 syamjonimi ;'-D

Love the foreground, sooo battered and it reminds me of a womble. I don't know why it just does. Not keen on carpet background.

it sure looks like this pencil has a lot of history. i'm not too sold on the background, maybe paper or cardboard would've been more fitting for a pencil. also, if you could have rotated it a bit rather than photographing onto the flat side you could maybe highlight the colors and the shape a bit more. just a thought, would have to try it to see if it works. -- gr8photos (4)

Interesting subject. It really stands out because it is such a weathered pencil. It kind of reminds me of one those really old tortoises. I really like this shot.
