 Outtake of the "Fences" challenge; that is to say, a byproduct of my search for fences. Shot 15 mins after sunrise on a cold, blustery day.

Single RAW image tone mapped lightly in Photomatix Pro and exported to CS3

Converted to B/W with the new CS3 "Channel Mixer +" dialogue box, a nifty utility I could learn to love. Sky gradient intensified with a deeper gradient on a multiply layer. Resized, sharpened, border, save for web.

That's all there was to it; Practically a straight-from-camera B/W in the sense that the tone mapping was very light, just a substitute for curves really: it comes naturally to me now. And the adjustment is very slight. Aside from making it into B/W, the only really noticeable thing I did was the sky gradient. And the sky already HAD a gradient, it's just that darkening it in conversion had a negative effect on some other tones.

Not sure about the composition (placement of the boat) but the look and feel of the photo is wonderful.I think that some burning would have rewarded you with higher scores. Overall very nice. 8

Nice nostalgic feel to this. Not sure if I'm crazy about the centering of the subject. I love it when there is more neg. space to one side.

This is a beautiful, serene shot...one that feels like it should have a story and has genuine emotional content. I think a little light dodging on the white of the boat to bring out some contrast might be nice...and I would personally blur the background or apply a gradient filter to highly the foreground, but this is still very well executed as is.
