There is going to be some MAJOR competition in this challenge...

Anyways, this shot was taken something like the day before the bokeh challenge was anounced it think wich got my nickers in a twist big time. This shot was pure luck to some extent.

The subject is a japanese beatle on a cone flower (ecchinacea) and the DOF happen to work in my advantage here because when the shadow from my lens fell on him he turned around and looked and raised his back paws in self defense. And the DOF line happen to land on his head which gives the photo that much more ummpff.

Obviously i used a macro lens, but as you all can figure no lens can take such a close up. So i had to zoom in via photoshop. I had to crop to such as extent that this shot is actually 725x725! So what you see is pretty much what you get. You can't blow this shot up anymore.

Processing:

Neat Image! (gosh what a difference in image quality!)
A bit of saturation (+10)
Crop
Resize

Good luck to all with the challenge that will most likely have something like 800 submissions!

Pre-voting gitters:

Hmmm, I really wanted a Best of 2006 challenge so i could submit this shot. Now I'm feeling like I should back out before I get disappointed with the score....But like IreneM said..what did she say...? It was something along the lines of "can't make an omlette with out breaking a few eggs". She didn't say that, but i think that's what she meant ;)

Splendid colors - the shallow DOF is lovely here!

Don't ask me how I got here 9 months later, but I'm stunned this didn't do better.

I know it's almost impossible to do this when working in macro, but I wonder if it might have been a more interesting photo if you'd had a wider DOF, so that the details of its body would have been in focus too.

WOW - nice capture! I love how this macro revealed the textures in this beetle's carapace. The colors are fantastic as well! << 9 >>

Love the close-up. I like the blurred look but I think it's a bit overdone.

Loooove the colours and especially how the background colours mimic the beetle ones. Though I usually love extremely shallow DOF, I think it could afford to be just a touch deeper here.

Wow, very cool macro. Like the shallow DOF and the circle bokeh on his legs and body. Great job!

Very nice color, composition, lighting, ect, and DOF, tho I personally would have liked a little more in focus to see more of this facinating buggaboo.

Just a smidge more DOF on this and it would have been an amazing shot. Still good. 7

Best: Bold macro
Worst: When attempting this, make sure the head is perfectly in focus..
