Challenge: Fireworks II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-400D Rebel XTi
Lens: Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Kleifarvatn, Iceland
Date: Jan 1, 2007
Aperture: F/7.1
ISO: 800
Shutter: 16 sec
Galleries: Sky, Landscape
Date Uploaded: Dec 31, 2006

I went out with the rest of my fireworks since last night to try and capture some fireworks going off in the countryside. The Northern lights forecast didn't look good, also it was cloudy and a drizzle of rain.

I decided to go anyway, called up my friend and we went to Kleifarvatn (a popular photo destination) and when we got there it stopped raining, the clouds broke apart and the Northern lights came out... I had 2 small rockets and 2 larger ones and (with help) managed to send them off before it started to snow 20 minutes later! Big thanks to Moe, fellow photographer and Gísli, who was in charge of sending the fireworks off ;)

Post processing included levels and conversion to jpg using Canon Digital Photo, filtered since I was shooting at iso 800 using Neat Image. Then curves, High pass filtering of foreground, levels and border using Photoshop CS3 beta.

First ribbon ! ;)
I expected this to do well, but a ribbon is beyond my wildest! Now I can strike off one (and a half) goal for this dpc year, and not a bad way of starting the year!.

Thanks for all the great comments, should probably have sent the original with the entry since many expected this to be a fake, and will do so next time!

The gray smudge right under the firework is the person that sent it off .

For those interested the rest of the pictures from this trip can be found in my flickr gallery

All I can say is that Iceland has got to be one of the most photogenic places on earth! I must visit one day for a long long stay to take as many photos as possible. That and there are some damn fine photographers that are "grown" there. Must be all that midnight sun in the summer and extensive night in the winter! LOL. Anyway this is an extremely creative and wonderfully executed image! Well done and congrats on winning the yellow ribbon!

Amazing shot, I love the blue night sky and the contrast of natural and manmade lightshows, congrats on your first ribbon!

Truly an amazing scene. It's not too difficult to shoot fireworks so in order to get a ribbon with this challenge, the shot had to be so much more on many levels. Your incorporation with the Northern Lights really is amazing. Compositionwise, it's nearly perfect but it has so much more great stuff I won't even complain about the cut off on the top. And the colors...could there have been a better combination than orange and green? I don't think so.
Thanks for being so dedicated in order to bring us this awesome visual treat.

Beautiful shot. I cant help but ask if that small brownish thing directly under the firework as it goes straight up (under the vertical streak) is the person setting it off?

Congratulations on the ribbon

Quite stunning. The bit of luck getting the lights to frame the firework explosion, combined with the effort you put in to be there in the first place really paid off in a big way.

Such a gorgeous shot! As if the typical Iceland sky. . .topped with those Northern lights weren't spectacular enough! This is off-the-chart!!!!

Mega Congratulations!

Congratulations on your Ribbon with this breathtaking image!! I've witnessed alot of fireworks displays, but this is something I will probably never see in person! Just spectacular, thanks for a well captured glimpse of this skyscape celebration!

Much better, IMO, than the first place winner which was simply a rather dull photo of city fireworks.

Blah! How come this didn´t win! Sorry Firsty but while your pic is a good ordinary fireworks shot it doesn´t come close to this and while I love Robert´s shot, this one is better. Oh well, at least you got a ribbon :)

Oh and honored people thought it were mine but no way I woud go through this trouble for a photograph on newyears eve, I am a family man and spent it with mine :)

Congrat´s!

Whilst this looks as though it would have been a technically difficult photo to create, it doesn't really work for me. Perhaps it is two in-camera shots? I am not sure but it has an unreal nature to it.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/06/2007 03:52:25 PM
I think this would be a better shot without the fireworks, but then it wouldnt fit the challenge. But this combination is not working for me.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
01/05/2007 09:17:00 PM
Sorry, but to me, this challenge is about fireworks, not the aurora.

01/05/2007 05:34:53 PM
Well I guess this is taken in Iceland. All I can say is one of the most original and refreshing fireworks shot I have ever seen, instant 10 and a fave. I personally would have darkened the sky though to draw the aurora out more but that´s just nitpicking.

Wish I had taken this and hope you win!

Nice.

It's a shame that the top of the firework's starburst is clipped off at the top. but apart from that it's well composed. Love the whisp of green smoke, and the way the stars are still visible.
