this is a fantastic image, the rain, the dog with 2 legs and no head, the contrast of the rain drops on the black tree, the bent tree which is supporting your son keeping him vertical, the centred composition, pretty much everything besides it may look better presented with a border top and bottom.
very nice and interesting capture, it has a great feel to it

Thanks for the various comments folks, always appreciated.

agenkin I don't do a lot of letterbox crops, but in this case there was quite a lot of bright sky higher in the picture through the branches, and the brightness drew the eye away from where I wanted the viewer to look, so I chose to crop it down to keep it focussed.

Bear_Music A crop fromthe right might well be interesting as a different picture but I really like the shape and flow of these lower branches and a continuity that they give to the picture, so again i kept it full width.

However I did choose to crop the dog as I liked the dynamic effect it had on the picture, and the tension generated by the different reactions to the rain - one staying one going. this didn't come over as strongly when Archie was fully visible.

Anyway thanks again for the comments, glad others find it pleasing.

Other than the fact that I agree with Bear_Music re: the ROT cropping making it a nicer image, I agree with Posthumous about most of the rest ... cool OOB image.

WAY cool. That's my first reaction. I'll disagree with Mr Bear (who's comment I read after my first reaction) and say that I really do like the tree and the young man centered. Can't say why, but it pleases me visually. And the picture makes me want to be out there in the rain with them.

Reaction:

Essence of rain. eerie, edgy due to dog cropping off-frame. Strong reaction that it would work better if half the space on the right were cropped out; that was an immediate thought I had. I love this kind of shot.

Pretty. But I'm a sucker for rain shots. :) The tree creates a very strong symmetry, which is broken by the fragment of the dog on the left. The story is interesting and anyone can associate with it. The atmospheric perspective adds depth to the shot and makes it yummy. I don't like that the image is cropped, because I think that cropping is a no-no in photography. The B&W conversion is pretty good.

Hmmmm. Posthumous has said it a lot better than I can. I am especially impressed by how the rain has become the grain (can't get away from that rhyme) and a noticeable and important part of the picture.

It is so hard to get a good picture of rain. agenkin has done it well. He captures the motion of rain, the energy of it. You have captured the feeling of rain, a texture of rain, as though rain were something unmoving in the air that we could touch. Everything in your photo is profoundly affected by this rain. Your son is under a tree because of it. The tree is heavy with it. Your dog defies the rain, and as such is almost banned from the photo. Notice that his form is balanced by a heavier presence of branches in the opposite corner. It is a perfectly balanced photo, which is rare in a photo so wide. The forms of son and tree curving against each other, the way the son's vertical is extended by some sort of branch in the foreground, this is perfectly composed the way a painting would be. But it is too momentary for a painting, and few painters would dare to paint only half a dog. No, this is pure photography. It is not painting, it is not reality, it is an impossibility: instead of water taking the shape of its container, the container takes the shape of water.

Now who has the most sense? The dog is off home - or said "darn it, we're out here so let's get wet." I like the raindrops captured. Certainly sums up one of those days.
