Crop, hue/sat to neutralize yellows, duotone conversion with inverted color gradient map adjustment layer, neat image, USM, levels, resize, border, save for web

This came out exactly as visualized in the making. I think it's powerful and even allegorical, but I have no clue how the voters will respond. Certainly off the beaten path. "Pattern" seems evident to me, but it's perhaps subsumed in the larger allegory, so...

I know that you know what you're doing, so I won't try to second guess....but I gave it a low vote, so I should comment. It was obvious that it was a nightlight or air freshener or something, and the pattern was fine, but it was also scuzzy dirty, which I found to be more disgusting than interesting. Hence the vote. Sorry.

What an interesting image - there's so much going on this picture that it begs to be pondered over. I like the choices in tone & contrast, but question the angle & composition slightly. The centering is slighted which makes me wish you had went either more off-center or symmetrical with this one - especially given the challenge.
