Challenge: Dirt (Advanced Editing V)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Location: Harwich Port, MA, USA
Date: Dec 10, 2006
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/60
Date Uploaded: Dec 10, 2006

Tone mapped from a single RAW exposure, exported to PS7.

A little work with the skew tool and a little cropping to clean up the geometry a little.

Face isolated and High Pass run on it to crisp it up.

Hue/Sat on entire image to warm it up a little, had a slight greenish cast. Local area Hue/Sat on the shirt, which was purple & distracting.

Slight gradient in from all 4 edges on a multiply layer to contain; faded to 20%

Resize, USM, save for web.

My neighbor Patrick after a long day; candid shot. He's a true scavenger :-)

What have you done to Patrick?? I don't remember him being that gray when I was there, was he? Maybe... Tell him I said hello and thanks for being a patient model with a dummy. The one in the window - THAT dummy.... sheeesh! :-)

great emotion here. Most people comment on the technical aspect but I don't hear much on the emotional/artsy aspect. Great composition. Thw wwf hat is ironic. Great shot

An excellent portrait- well-lit, fine detail, with artistic touches leading into a story which the viewer can write.

Great technique, I seem to want to cropp tighter on the right, up to his coller, and add more dirt to his coat.

Great candid... I particularly like the product placement ;-)

I would love to see this in a grungy black and white... yeah, it may be overdone, but in an image like this it would work wonders!!! - 7

Dare I call this "Bear Music processing"? Is this going to be the biggest thing since Joey Lawrence processing? Regardless, this is a great image that fulfills the challenge well. 9

Nice shot, but I believe I would have liked it more without the HDR treatment. As it is here I'll give you 6 - a nice "normal" version would probably have earned you a 7.

For all I know it could be real dirt, but it looks like make-up after the processing.

This has so many great things about it but I can't help but think that the pose seems unnatural - as if the camera is so close that the man is trying to allow focus on the background and himself by leaning back toward the window. This has huge potential for some sort of message It think - especially with the mannequin head. also: Taking away the logo hat and fleece jacket could make this more timeless me thinks.

Love most of the picture; but that head on the left is distracting. The guy has interesting features that cause me to ponder, but then the eyes on that damn haunted/possessed head suck my gaze right in and I have to pull away to look at what I'm really interested in in the picture. Love the weathered wood and the old budweiser can. Get rid of that damn head and I'll give you a 10!

Nice, sort of. This is tone-mapped, right? It looks more like a drawing sort of. Also, I am not sure how this fits in with "dirt". Is it the dirty face? or the clutter behind the window? It does have a dirty, old, rustic kind of feel to it though. ~6

I like the processing on this one, but can't decide if the subject is supposed to be the guy, or the head in the window.

This is cool. I like how the head in the window is sort of a mimic of his. The red eyes are GREAT! 8
