Challenge: Something Old (Classic Editing)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE 7
Location: Lexington, KY
Date: Aug 3, 2002
Date Uploaded: Aug 4, 2002

This was a scene from the Street Rod Nationals at Louisville, KY. They claim to have had over 11,000 pre-1949 cars on display and I believe them. It was an awesome sight to see so many beautiful cars in one place.

I just love this... perfect composition, good contrast and clarity. The B&W is nice and not overdone here. --10-- sohr

Something old. Use your photographic technique to emphasize the age of your subject.
Composition - quite good
Technical Aspects - quite good
Meets Challenge - yes
Visual Impact / Originality - good

This clearly represents the challenge but the composition just doesn't do much for me. Maybe it's because there doesn't seem to be a focal point. I think a color image would have provided more interest. The subject is very interesting and I think there is a lot of potential here.

Wow! This is BEAUUUUTIFUL! I really love the contrast of dark and light. Great overall composition. A 10!

I love this B&W shot. I think the photographer captured as much detail and information as possible with this angle. Good eye; nice work!

Love the light caught on the car - shows how well polished it is. Find the gateway at the back and the tall pole behind it a little distracting. I think the layout isn't quite right but I can't put my finger on it. Sorry!

Black & white really works well here. Angle of shot is great.

Technically, very good.

Like the concept. Like the use of b/w. Would like to see at least one entire car. 4 sjgleah

A jaunty collection of well loved old cars--a change from some of the shambling wrecks we have seen andrewm

When I look at this, the vehicle on the right just doesn't seem to belong in the picture. It fits because they are all cars but it interrupts the strong line created by the other cars entering from the left of the frame an that's why it seems out of place. If the car on the right occupied most of the frame and the others were just breifly shown it may work better for me. Possibly shooting vertically instead of horizontally and cutting out the single car but keeping the line of cars and the tree on the left.

Awesome composition! Love the sun highlight on the car! sylk

I've thought about his photo seeral times since I left your score on monday. It's really very nice. But I think I'd have preferred one or the other focus of the picture. Either the amazing hoods all in a line OR an even closer crop of the incredible curves of the car on the right. It's almost too much for me. (But then, that's me)

Not bad, but a bit hard to tell the focus. I would have stuck with the car on the right.

wow at all these oldies... very good shot... I would love to have a photo opportunity like this one sometime :) - jmsetzler

Very well done. The black and white really brings out the detail on this one. Focus is good, lighting is good, subject matter is good. 8

black & white ruins this picture
08/07/2002 07:56:00 AM
Very crisp and clear and the black & white is very effective.

This is a really great picture with lots of personality and it meets the challenge really well; I would have scored a 10 but for the slight overexposure of the background skyline. (is that too picky) (9)

I love this shot. I love it in B/W. - 9

top 3 for sure. beautiful cars, beautiful composition, and perfect match for the theme. 10!

i like this shot, the reflections on the fender and hood are great. it is busy though, and even though they are old, they are all restored, which, to me at least, detracts from the goal of this challenge. ~mcmurma

Very nice. The position of the casr works perfectly. The detail and DOF are also great.

Great composition and focus detail. Are the cars parked on a hill, though? The one on the right is level, the ones on the left are angled down. Good shot overall.

~swoon~ Beautiful ! I love old cars and these are too cool. I was hoping someone would find a car show.
08/05/2002 05:35:00 PM
nice one. good angle, sunlight is a little bit too bright. i like how all the vehicles are lined up to the left and then there's the one facing me to the right. the ones to the left all look like they are on a slope though and about to roll into the vehicle on the right. looking at the pole in the background, i think this is your photo. some level adjustment would help with that. -- gr8photos (6)

I liked it!

Awesome b&w! great composition and contrast and focus and everything else too. 10 Lisa

Exellent depth of field--I think depth of focus is a better term. Great contrast!
Very nicely done.
08/05/2002 11:46:00 AM
Nice pic. I would like to see this picture in color also.
08/05/2002 01:47:00 AM
I don't think anyone would argue with you that these are old cars. But they are in mint condition. The rusted out ones (by other photographers) is a better demonstration of "old."
That aside, you took a GREAT picture here.
