I think showing the front of the engine would have grounded this picture better, rather than giving us this seemingly never-ending column of train.

Fantastic, I love thw composition and high contrast. 10

Black and white works well here and it clearly fits the challenge. I'd like to see a slightly different angle to include more of the front of the engine, but that's just me.

grey, moody, old looking ! Nicely framed, interesting shot

Very nice but maybe you could have framed it a bit better to incorporate more of the front end??? Or perhaps it was not pictureque. Good job.

Just wanted to say that I really like this one. Can't think of any critiques, it's great! 10 lecalan

Great job! The contrast is a bit strong but maybe that's the effect that you were going for :) Great subject matter definately fits that challenge.

Would have been better with some sky rather than just white out at the top. I guess the weather didn't give you option?
08/10/2002 01:31:00 PM
Lovely shot though too dark overall on the body of the train.

This is one of my favourites this week! A good subject and I like the strong contrast. Good composition. I like the grass in the foreground because it makes visible that the train is abandoned and on a probably long forgotten track. Clever title, too.

Nice contrast ! way to get some depth!
08/07/2002 10:23:00 PM
Very good picture but I think it would have more impact in color.

would have liked to see more of the front of the train.
what happened to the sky?
i like the composition

I like trains. Shots of trains are always neat.

I love the subject

excellent photo :) I love the trains... I would love to hear about this one too... I like the composition on this one with the weeds in front... that adds a great mood to this old train... My only issue here is the front of the train... i wonder why you decided not to include that part in the image? good work :) - jmsetzler

black & white ruins this picture

I love the content and the picture itself – I'd have preferred a colour image in this case, because I think it would show the age of this splendid old engine. (8)

very sharp image, but I think I would have liked it better in color. Maybe the setting sun reflecting off the train and warming it up a little.I like the whole old train idea, though.

nice photo, but the lighting seems harsh, and i really wanted to see the detail in the shadows. also, it would have been great to see the front of this locomotive.

where did the color go?
08/06/2002 04:09:00 PM
B&W is nice for this subject. It's similar to another submission from this week and for my tastes, though, there needs to be more of the environment. It's obviously a train, but what makes it worth noting? I can't help but wonder if there is something off to either side that would help draw attention to the specialness of this particular train.

I like the black adn white on this. the contrast is really nice. karmat
08/06/2002 01:42:00 PM
I find the contrast a little bit harsh but the b/w works well and the framing is spot on.
08/06/2002 01:01:00 PM
Very nicely done. The b/w does work, yet I would like to see the color version. I definately like the compositon and angle. Good photography - 9

I would like to have seen this one in color, I think the age might have had more impact.
08/05/2002 03:53:00 PM
What a wonderful photo, and love that it is b&w. lhall

i love trains..nice shot
08/05/2002 12:23:00 PM
I bet this would have looked great in color.Nice composition.
08/05/2002 01:17:00 AM
Great use of B&W! Great cropping!

I actually took several train pictures to submit myself. I leveled it down to just two pictures. Those were also eliminated when I decided that I didn't do the subject justice. Your train is much older. You framed it wonderfully. I think "color" may have actually enhanced this picture.

After coming back to this site twice and spending more than 30 minutes reviewing all pictures I had giving a first vote of "8", I've decided to pick this one as "best" b/w.
