OKIE DOKIE!! It appears you have photographed a species of yellowjacket :) I have found the link for you YellowJackets :)

IMHO, you are lucky not to have been stung as those little boogers are quite agressive :)

Perhaps you are a bee whisperer? This is certainly a very interesting photograph in that the colours of his thorax and head match the yellow of the goldenrod :) The detail of the hairs is AWESOME!! I am drooling over this pic :)

the focal point seems to be on the bee's back. too bad it's not on the head. Nice marco nevertheless. good luck
