Wow! I wasn't expecting blue! Was there a trick? Hmmm, I pushed "freeze time" on the 5D...

The funny thing is, I still think I entered the weaker of two images...

hi, congratz on your ribbon ... what to say ? well the photo is technicaly not so good, but you heard that before ... i think the voters were appealed with the story they imagined in their beautiful heads :-)
the composition is okay of course since it follows the rules, and i really "hate" the frame :-) LOL ... nhf, okay ?

peace,
goran

I have edited the comment that I made yesterday (see below). I feel it was unneccessarily harsh. Sorry about that.

Jason: this is simply great with delicate artistic sentiment. A winner!
Congratulations on your Blue.

Great sharpness on the seed escaping the dandelion, and gorgeous green bokeh, too. I think the dandelion itself could look better, though, somehow. There's something about it that I can't quite put my finger on. It looks kind of stark, literal, and uninteresting. I think maybe it's the fact that the individual seeds of the dandelion all kind of blur together into one big white ball. We can't clearly see the individual seeds of the dandelion, as we can in Ursula's shot. But I realize that in shooting situations like this you kind of have to take what you get. It may take a hundred shots to get one with a nice sharp seed escaping, and what if the dandelion is less-than-ideal in that one shot? Not much you can do about it.

As another thought, I wonder how this shot would work if the dandelion were a bit farther back so that it was distinctly out-of-focus. This could enhance the sense that the seed has escaped from the dandelion and is moving away from it, kind of like Luke Skywalker flying out of the Death Star ;) It would also draw more attention to the lovely seed and less attention to the less-nice-to-look-at dandelion. Just a thought. Clearly, the voters like this shot just the way it is!

Congratulations on your blue ribbon!

Lovely photo Jason! Way to continue to put Oregon on the DPC map of the world! May your "seeds" continue to scatter and take root, bringing beauty and fruitfulness.

Big congrats on your Blue Ribbon! This is what I was shooting for with my thistle seed image, but i didn't have the patience (or forarm strength) to wait for the wind to release a seed for me and I didn't have my tripod to set it up and make the seed fly myself! Congrats again! Wonderful shot with great DOF and splendid sharpness!

I would never comment on an image like this during the voting stage. I would have given it a four, and moved on (although I did not vote in this challenge): I can't afford commenting on every four I give. Whether to take me seriously or not - is definitely up to you.
