Challenge: Silhouettes III (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location: South Africa
Date: Aug 25, 2006

This was taken in b/w with a red filter, manual mode, high contrast and hi sharpness just before sundown with the sun directly behind the child's head. The picture is pretty much staight from the camera, save for a bit of cropping and changing of the image size.

Hello Hamish,
I think this picture is highly underrated! I think it should have placed much higher in this challenge. The contrast and composition is just perfect! The DOF is just spot on and the white line going from his lip and down the frame makes this picture what it is. The only thing I would change is to take the couple of white hairs at the top left of the picture. Good luck in future challenges. You've got lots of potential.

Best regards, Arnit

I had this rated pretty well and it seems along with 80 others. Nice outline and communicates an emotion very well.

Nice silhouette, nice backlighting, but I feel it could maybe have been improved by cropping out the light areas behind the head, which in tern would have removed the image from the centre of the frame.

I think the dark bottom half weakens the shape of the silhouette.

This photo captures the mood of the child, and the lighting is great

I like the highlighting on parts of the silhouette, It separates the torso nicely from the background.

6. Would have been higher, but I don't like the crop.

I like the halo effect under his chin. Perfect title. Not particularly fond of the crop. I like the "chopped" head effect but I think it works better when his head fills the whole frame. 6
