Well, I've wanted to try something of this sort since seeing otisxmikes's "Tainted Woman" . I thought soft focus was a great challenge for it. I did want like an actual model for this but I never have any that are older than 5. lol so I had to use myself. Luckily I don't expect my fat face to score very high so I wont have to see this in the high scoring images on my profile page. I just got the last self portrait pushed off. ;) but I do hoep to get soem useful comments to help me do this technique better the next time. so anyhow, plexiglass with vaseline painted on it and a small area in the middle without it. held up the plexiglass focused the shot clicked the shutter and ran and sat down while the timer counted down and held my face up to the glass. The End. oh wait. the processing. here goes.......
crop
hue/sat to desat a bit
selective color, changed background and eyes incidentally from blue to purple.
curves
levels
resize
usm
save for web

The End. for real this time ;)

I find it rather hard to understand why 9 people voted 1, 12 voted 2, and 23 voted 3. That is rather vexing.

This should have ranked higher IMHO! Don't know what people dislike here. Composition, lighting, colors... everything worked perfect here. Perhaps you could have placed the glass nearer to you camera to blur out the vaseline. And lights in front of the glass might have made the vaseline look a bit 'harsh'. But I'm not an expert in those techniques, don't trust me ;) Anyway: I thought this would end up in the top 10.

"Fat face"? No way! You are beautiful! Your lips are seducing :)

Very creative I must say. Cant keep noticing that face doesnt have the same painting effect as around...thats pitty. Also light from right side gives some unneeded reflection.

I absolutely adore the color of your lipstick. Works so well with your skin and the other colors in the shot. You are pretty!

Your photo stands out among the entries. I like the colours and composition. The features - eyes - are in sharp focus. But using the glass and vaseline (it's only just occurred to me that it is vaseline, my first two trips by I thought it was some sort of shower cubicle glass) you have achieved the overall effect needed. 8.

creative and interesting way to achieve the challenge. good pose, good expression... not too jaded! ;) I suppose some will remark on the bruise-like light pattern cast on your cheek and jaw. They don't bother me much but do detract from the painted effect. 7

Great idea! It´s very good! The only issue here is the eyes direction. To me it must follow the natural pose style and she must be looking forward. But a great creative and good taste shot.

This is a great image, nicely composed, love the editing and the pose of the 'model' is great. But, I cant see how this is soft focus (MHO)

that's really clever...when I saw the thumbnail it looked like a painting...my only criticism is the shadows on your/your model's face from the vaseline
