Taken in Chandler, AZ during a whopper of a storm. No rain where we were though so I set the tripod up outside the door of the truck. I was not to keen on getting out of the vehicle to take shots even though the lightning was fairly far away. You never know...

I did keep the pole in the shot on purpose to act as a foreground subject. Seemed to work nicely with the lucky bolt I got. Notice how friggin huge that bolt is! Those little tiny things on the horizon are power poles.

The color from the foreground was from the lights of cars driving by.

11th...d'oh! Well, I guess it was close. Some really great shots in this challenge.

Wow. Lightning shots are always cool, but this is truly incredible. Your framing with the foreground pole is good, and the colors are very nice.

But what makes me really gawk is the tiny power poles on the horizon. I'm glad you pointed them out, because you're right: they really give a sense of the enormity of lightning and the raw power they represent.

Going in my favorites to keep your other shots in there company. :)

Great Shot Doc. My first choice was a lightning shot, but decided that no one would like lightning as a zen. Glad you didn't think the same as me. I gave your bolt my highest score of the challenge. Van

Putting aside the challenge as I missed voting, I find lightning bolts really hard to do well. This is really nicely taken and the colours of foreground and background complement wonderfully.

Nice shot Doc! We do get quite the storms during the monsoon and no rain is not unusual (But I am sure you know that). I got 15 or 20 good shots of lightning just 2 days before yours I have a few in my portfolio. I guess your timing was better due to the fact you got into a challenge with one. :-P

Good stuff and a top 20, very nice!

This was definetly in my top 3. Should have been a ribbon. Nice to see something different in these challenges. Getting tired of seeing different variations of the same shots.

8 - Nice shot, capture and composition. Minor, but the lighting bottom right is slightly distracting, in my opinion.

Beautiful blue! Normally having a telephone pole in a picture is not good - but in this case it's great. The pole helps the composure. What a tough capture!

Great capture here. The contrast in colors and the telephone here make for a great composition!

It's so hard to capture lightning...and to do it so beautifully too, good job! The way it is "falls" from the sky...I love it. 10

Awesome shot. I think the foreground telephone pole and the hint of city lights on the horizon combine to really give an excellent sense of scale to the strike. Colors are great, really don't have anything negative to say. 9.

Lightning .... fascinating event! Great planning with the compo (the pole and lines frame the lightning within the frame of the shot) and excellent colors.

This is a very nice lightning shot. I really like having some foreground light in it as you've done. I didn't expect to see this kind of shot in an 'Action Shot' challenge - not sure I'm getting the connection.

I really like the composition... that you left the telephone pole in the shot.... gorgeous colors and capture.... also like the lighting in the foregroud.... really makes it for me by adding tension to the shot.... Excellent... Congrats
